TV-Series
Description
Azuki Shinatsu is a second-year student at Tenbi Academy and a prominent supporting character in the Maken-Ki! Battling Venus series. She is a member of the Student Council Security Division, also known as the Magical Enforcement Committee, where she holds the position of the second-year representative. Physically, Azuki is a young woman of average height with a bob-cut hairstyle and distinct red hair. Her most recognizable features are her purple eyes and the small bandage she always wears across her nose. She typically wears the standard Tenbi Academy uniform but complements it with purple fingerless gloves to prepare for combat. Her figure is often noted, and her school uniform, as well as her work outfit, frequently sustain significant damage during her battles, a trait that is particularly common for her.
In terms of personality, Azuki projects a very strong and aggressive exterior. She is known for being rude, short-tempered, and possessing a genuine love for fighting, giving her a decidedly tomboyish demeanor. Despite this tough and abrasive public face, Azuki hides a softer, more sentimental side. She has a secret but deep affection for cute animals and stuffed toys, with a particular fondness for bears, a trait she shares with her friend Kodama Himegimi. This contrast between her tough attitude and her private love for cuddly things is a core part of her character.
Azuki comes from a poor family, which is a primary motivating factor in her life. To support herself and her family, she works a part-time job as a waitress at a maid cafe called Macaron. Her financial struggles also heavily influence her future aspirations. Prior to the events of the Clash with Venus arc, Azuki was actively attempting to join the organization known as Kamigari after her graduation, seeing it as a way to secure a stable income to support her family. Her current status regarding this plan is ambiguous, largely due to the growing hostility between Tenbi Academy and the Kamigari.
Within the story of Tenbi Academy, Azuki is introduced as a powerful and accomplished fighter. She is officially ranked as an A-Rank Maken user, placing her among the most skilled students at the school. Her role is primarily that of a combatant and rival to other strong characters. She has a notable rivalry with Kinua Garrett and Yan Min, both of whom possess physical abilities that challenge her own. Her first encounter with the protagonist, Takeru Ooyama, occurs when he witnesses her dueling a first-year student named Kai Kurigasa. When Takeru interferes in the match to help her, she becomes irritated, feeling that he has violated the rules and humiliated her. However, this incident marks the beginning of their acquaintance, and she eventually comes to recognize him as a reliable and strong friend, though this respect does not develop into romantic feelings. Her relationships with other female characters are generally positive; she is friends with fellow committee members like Uruchi Minaya, Inaho Kushiya, and Kodama Himegimi. In an accidental and surprising turn of events, her first kiss is taken by the student council president, Furan Takaki.
Azuki's development throughout the series is tied to her growth as a fighter. She is dedicated to improving her combat skills, which leads to the evolution of her Maken. Her abilities are focused on unarmed combat, specifically a powerful kicking-based martial art. She is an expert in using her legs in battle and relies on her own superior agility and physical strength rather than solely on magical augmentation. Her Maken is named Hawk. In its initial form, it is a boot-like device worn on her right foot. While Hawk is not classified as a physical enhancement-type Maken and is only a B-Rank item, Azuki's own exceptional physical capabilities allow her to use it to boost her speed, agility, and kicking power, as well as to perform aerial maneuvers by kicking off the air itself. Through training, she later evolves Hawk into Dual Hawk, a more powerful version worn on both feet that significantly increases her combat output.
