Description
Leon Kuze is a Japanese-American tactical surface fighter pilot who serves as a supporting character in Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse. His father was Admiral Kuze, who commanded the United States Navy's Pacific Fleet during the initial BETA landing in Japan. Leon himself was a member of the United States Army 65th Combat Training Group, a unit known as the Infinities, where he piloted alongside Sharon Heim and Guylos McCloud. He is frequently seen wearing sunglasses and is characterized by an indifferent and at times contemptuous attitude toward things he considers beneath him.
Leon's Japanese-American heritage is a central aspect of his identity. Unlike his former partner and rival Yuuya Bridges, who despises his Japanese roots, Leon embraces his heritage and takes pride in it. This difference in outlook creates constant friction between the two. Leon and Yuuya were classmates at the same training institution and later served together in the same unit during their United States Army days. However, a deep-seated grudge developed between them after an accident that killed a fellow pilot named Rick Sven. Leon blames Yuuya for the incident, and this resentment drives much of his hostility toward him.
As a pilot, Leon is highly skilled but has a kill score that is overshadowed by Yuuya's superior record, a fact that fuels his competitive nature. His motivation is partly to prove himself and to settle the score with Yuuya, though he also remains loyal to the Infinities and the broader mission of defending humanity against the BETA. Throughout the story, Leon's role is that of a rival and occasional reluctant ally. He initially harbors a strong grudge, but as events unfold during the XFJ project and the struggle against the BETA and human antagonists, he is forced to cooperate with Yuuya and other pilots. His development involves moving from pure antagonism to a grudging working relationship, though his pride and competitive edge never fully disappear.
Leon's notable abilities lie in his proficiency as a tactical surface fighter pilot, his membership in an elite U.S. Army training group, and his capacity to operate effectively under pressure. His combat style is aggressive and confident, matching his personality. While he does not possess any unique technological or supernatural abilities, his skill as a pilot and his familiarity with high-stakes operations make him a competent soldier in the ongoing war against the BETA.
