Description
Hyougo Ootto is the general manager and founder of the family restaurant Wagnaria!!. He is a man in his thirties, standing 180 cm tall with black hair and black eyes. His birthday is November 20th. His defining characteristic is his role as a devoted husband, leading him to spend almost all of his time away from the restaurant on a singular quest.

Ootto is a kind, patient, and middle-aged man who rarely displays anger, even in the face of unusual provocation. His gentle demeanor allows him to tolerate eccentric behavior from his staff that would likely frustrate anyone else. While he holds the highest position of authority at Wagnaria!!, his constant absence means his presence is often so faint that coworkers describe him as being like air, an observation used to prevent another employee from attacking him out of fear. Despite this treatment, he never considers firing anyone, demonstrating his fundamentally good-natured and forgiving personality.

His primary motivation is finding his beloved wife, Haruna Ootto, who went missing years ago after leaving home to go shopping. Haruna possesses an extraordinarily poor sense of direction, leading her to wander across Japan through unconventional routes such as sewers and forests. Ootto travels the country tirelessly in search of her, returning to the restaurant only occasionally. When he does visit, he typically brings unusual souvenirs from his travels, such as foreign candy or strange masks, which are often intended as gifts for the restaurant's manager, Kyouko Shirafuji.

Within the story, Ootto's role is that of the founding figure who is almost never present. He leaves all operational work to Kyouko Shirafuji, who in turn does little actual work but relies on him as a source of food. Despite his rare appearances, he is capable of efficiently handling the backlog of managerial duties in the short time he is at the restaurant, proving his underlying competence.

Ootto has a number of key relationships that define his interactions. His most significant relationship is with his wife, Haruna, and his dedication to finding her is the core of his character. His relationship with Kyouko Shirafuji is one of mutual reliance, as he depends on her to keep the restaurant running while she depends on his food deliveries. He has a unique bond with the employee Aoi Yamada, whom he found on the streets and brought to work at Wagnaria!! out of pity. Yamada develops a deep attachment to him, wanting him to be her adoptive father, a request he patiently but consistently refuses. He later becomes grateful for Yamada's unique ability to locate his wife when she goes missing again. His interactions with the waitress Yachiyo Todoroki are often dangerous, as she threatens him with a katana for delivering food to Shirafuji, which she misinterprets as a romantic gesture. Despite this, Todoroki feels guilt over allowing Haruna to wander away from the restaurant on one occasion.

Ootto undergoes a significant development when he is finally reunited with his wife in the third season. This reunion is facilitated by Aoi Yamada, who returns to the restaurant with Haruna in tow. However, this happy event does not mark the end of his troubles, as his wife's terrible sense of direction persists, meaning the searches may not be entirely over.

A notable ability demonstrated by Ootto is his remarkable efficiency; despite being away for long periods, he can quickly resolve all pending paperwork and decisions during his brief visits to the restaurant. He also possesses a great deal of physical endurance and patience, demonstrated by his long and almost entirely fruitless journey across Japan searching for his wife.
