TV-Series
Description
Izumi Takanashi is the 28-year-old second eldest daughter of the Takanashi family and works as a professional romance novelist. She stands approximately 173 cm tall and has dark brown hair and eyes, bearing a strong physical resemblance to a younger version of her mother, Shizuka. Her appearance is almost always disheveled, characterized by messy, unkempt hair, a lack of makeup, and a consistent preference for wearing black clothing.

Her most defining characteristic is her extremely weak constitution, which leaves her in a perpetual state of sickly fragility. Izumi cannot lift anything heavier than a fountain pen without suffering from severe muscle aches that last for several days. This physical limitation prevents her from performing any household chores, cleaning her own room, or even walking for extended periods. She often crawls on the floor to conserve energy and relies on taxis as her primary mode of transportation when she must travel outside her home. As a result, she is almost entirely dependent on her younger brother, Souta Takanashi, for daily care including meals and general housekeeping.

True to her profession, Izumi writes all of her romance novels by hand using only fountain pens on manuscript paper, as she completely refuses to use modern technology such as computers. This habit results in persistent ink stains on her face, hands, and clothing, which she accepts as a minor inconvenience as long as her final work is beautiful. Her bedroom is notoriously messy, filled with stacks of books, waste paper, and clutter to the point that opening the door can cause paper to spill out. Very few family members have ever entered her room. Despite her unkempt living conditions, Izumi is actually a good cook when forced into the situation, though she protests due to the physical strain it causes her.

Personality-wise, Izumi is reclusive, timid, and speaks with a notably low voice and slow cadence. She rarely leaves her room, let alone her house, having effectively become a shut-in who spends her days writing or battling creative blocks. She frequently despairs over impending deadlines and struggles with writer's block, which intensifies her anxious and self-deprecating demeanor. Despite her dependence on Souta, Izumi has a protective side. When the siblings were children, she shielded Souta from the mistreatment of their other sisters, making her the only sister who actively defended him. However, this protectiveness coexists with a deep-seated fear that if Souta were to get a girlfriend, he would begin to neglect his care for her. This anxiety drives a significant part of her story, including an episode where she enters a severe writer's block upon mistakenly believing that Souta is dating his small-statured coworker, Popura Taneshima. Her misunderstanding goes so far that she initially accuses Souta of being a pedophile due to Popura's childlike appearance.

Izumi's role in the story is primarily as a supporting character who represents Souta's complicated home life. Her interactions with the main cast at Wagnaria are limited but memorable. During her creative slump, she impulsively leaves her room and encounters Mahiru Inami, who helps to cheer her up. On another occasion, she attempts to set up Souta with Mahiru after assuming he has broken up with Popura. She also has a relationship with her youngest sister, Nazuna, who has entered Izumi's room and accompanied her on an unsuccessful outing to visit Wagnaria, though Izumi quickly tired and had to return home by taxi.

The key relationships in Izumi's life center on her family. Her mother, Shizuka, is often absent for work but occasionally makes demanding requests, such as forcing Izumi to cook despite her protests about physical strain. Her four siblings include the eldest sister Kazue, third sister Kozue, youngest sister Nazuna, and her only brother Souta, who is her primary caregiver. Among this group, only Izumi and Nazuna have been shown entering Izumi's room. Izumi shares a bond with Nazuna, though their relationship includes a dynamic where Nazuna helps care for her as well.

In terms of character development, Izumi remains largely static throughout the series. Her physical fragility, creative struggles, dependence on Souta, and reclusive lifestyle persist without significant change, even when she is involved in external adventures or family interactions. There is an alternate universe storyline in which she becomes a main protagonist after interdimensional travelers land in her room, with Souta negotiating her inclusion in their mission by promising to oversee her well-being. Her name carries meaning, with Izumi translating to fountain or spring, referencing her writing tools, while Takanashi combines characters meaning little bird and play. Among the sisters, she shares a naming pattern where all sisters have zu as the second character in their names, unlike Souta who breaks this convention.
