Description
Aoi Hyodou is the nephew of Satsuki, the owner of the maid café Maid Latte where Misaki Ayuzawa works. He is the son of Satsuki's older brother and is introduced as a 14-year-old student attending Seisen Middle School. His birthday is July 16, and he stands 153 centimeters tall. He has androgynous features with large blue eyes framed by long lashes and dark purple hair cut in a bowl style. For his online persona as the popular net idol known as Aoi-chan, he wears a curly blonde wig and dresses in frilly, fairy-tale style outfits that belong to his aunt.
Aoi has a strong affinity for cute, pretty, and fashionable things and enjoys being the center of attention. He has a short temper and displays little patience, often reacting with irritation when things do not go his way. He harbors dislikes for what he considers dirty things, boring knowledge, adults, and children, as well as for school, his classmates, and studying. He becomes easily embarrassed after performing kind acts or showing affection, frequently responding with sudden bursts of anger to conceal his true feelings. Despite frequently criticizing Misaki for her unfeminine strength and what he perceives as her poor fashion sense, he develops a grudging respect for her honesty and directness.
Aoi's motivations stem from a painful past in which he was mocked and bullied by other boys for his feminine features and his interest in traditionally feminine clothing and aesthetics. As a response to this ridicule, he began cross-dressing and toying with the feelings of men, believing that making them fall for his female persona would earn him respect and validation for who he truly is. He desires to prove his cuteness to those who once laughed at him, including his own father, who disapproves of his cross-dressing and frequently throws away his clothes, leading to Aoi being kicked out of his house on multiple occasions.
In the story, Aoi first appears at Maid Latte seeking a job, though Satsuki refuses because of his young age. He attempts to seduce Takumi Usui, intrigued by the fact that Usui does not fall for his charms and seems to only think about Misaki. Misaki eventually exposes Aoi as a boy after finding him in the staff room, though it is revealed that Takumi knew his true gender from the beginning. After this revelation, Aoi continues to be involved with the Maid Latte staff. He later appears at his aunt Nagisa's beach house, having been sent there by his father to become more manly, though his dresses are confiscated and he is forced to do physical labor.
Aoi's key relationships include his aunt Satsuki, who supports his dreams and personal expression, providing him with clothes and a place to stay when his father rejects him. His relationship with Misaki evolves from antagonism to a complex bond of admiration and frustration. He scolds her for being indecisive about her relationship with Takumi and for unintentionally leading another boy on, which pushes Misaki to finally acknowledge her true feelings. Despite developing a crush on Misaki himself, he refrains from confessing, recognizing that her heart belongs to Takumi. His interactions with Takumi are marked by Aoi's frustration that Takumi sees through his disguises and teases him in return. Over time, he builds a circle of acquaintances including Shōichirō Yukimura, Soutarou Kano, and the trio of students known as the three idiots, who relate to him in a dynamic sometimes compared to a queen and her servants.
Throughout the series, Aoi shows notable development. He begins as someone who uses cross-dressing as a tool for revenge and validation but gradually learns to embrace his love for fashion on his own terms. His voice begins to deepen and become more masculine over time, a change that initially frustrates him. By later chapters, he has grown taller, reaching approximately the same height as Misaki. He eventually begins dating Honoka, another character associated with Maid Latte, and in the story's epilogue set ten years later, he has become a talented fashion designer, having found a way to express his creativity professionally.
Aoi possesses several notable abilities. He is a skilled and convincing cross-dresser, able to maintain an online persona as a popular female idol without revealing his true identity. He has significant talent in sewing and costume design, creating his own outfits as well as designing and making clothes for Misaki, even teaching her knitting techniques. He is also trained in beach volleyball by his aunt Nagisa, demonstrating athletic ability despite his disdain for physical activities he considers unpleasant. In character popularity polls, he ranked third among the series cast.
