TV-Series
Description
Kanade Maki is a student at the prestigious Miyabigaoka High School and serves as the vice-president of its student council under the leadership of Tora Igarashi. Coming from a prominent family in the food service industry, he is the heir to the Maki Dining Group, a large restaurant chain that operates everything from family establishments to high-end dining venues across the country. At the age of sixteen, he stands at 178 centimeters tall and possesses short black hair, and is almost always seen with his eyes narrowed into a perpetual, gentle smile, rarely opening them fully.
Kanade’s personality is defined by his unwavering loyalty and his sense of devotion to a master. He is calm, respectful, and highly rational, approaching his duties with a level of precision that earns him the complete trust of his peers, particularly Tora Igarashi, who describes him as someone who excels in his performance and completes every job perfectly, guaranteeing success. He prefers to operate in a subordinate role, finding purpose and joy in supporting the person he serves, often acting more as a personal butler to Tora than as a fellow student council officer. Despite his calm exterior, he is deeply invested in the affairs of his superior and becomes troubled when complications arise in Tora’s personal life.
His primary motivation throughout the story is to act in the best interest of Tora Igarashi, to whom he shows profound respect and dedication. Initially, this loyalty manifests in his role as an executor of Tora’s plans. He is tasked with investigating Misaki Ayuzawa, the president of Seika High School, after witnessing her capabilities. In a more significant plot line, he attempts to acquire the building housing the Maid Latte café with the intention of replacing it with a butler café, believing his vision of a formal, high-end establishment to be superior. However, his motivations become more complex as he observes Tora’s growing romantic interest in Misaki. Believing that this relationship threatens Tora’s future and his arranged engagement to Chiyo Sakurai, Kanade takes actions behind the scenes to separate them, such as informing Takumi Usui about Tora’s feelings in hopes of creating a barrier.
In the story, Kanade serves as a foil to the main characters and a secondary antagonist whose perspective evolves. His initial role is that of a representative of the elite, wealthy world that contrasts with the more humble Seika High and the maid café. His confrontation with Maid Latte brings him into direct conflict with Misaki. During a footman audition competition, which he moderates, he attempts to expose the disguised Misaki and her partner, Takumi Usui. It is here that his rigid ideology is challenged. When he accuses Misaki of not cooperating properly with her injured partner, she rebukes him, stating that she prefers a compassionate workplace where colleagues support each other over an environment that pushes individuals until they collapse. This moment forces Kanade to doubt his own philosophy, which prioritized perfect service without regard for employee welfare. As a result of this lesson, he ultimately decides against displacing Maid Latte and, with Tora’s assistance, opens his butler café on a different plot of prime land.
His key relationships are central to his development. His relationship with Tora Igarashi is the most defining, as he devotes himself to serving and protecting Tora’s interests, often anticipating his needs and managing his personal business. He is visibly saddened when Tora cynically claims that those around him, including Kanade, are only interested in his power and money. In contrast, his relationship with Misaki Ayuzawa evolves from mere assignment to reluctant respect. While he respects her dedication and work ethic, he ultimately states that she is not someone he wishes to be involved with, viewing her as a disruptive influence on Tora’s life. He is also a quiet supporter of Chiyo Sakurai, Tora’s fiancée, and works to promote their union, even going behind Tora’s back to arrange a confrontation to protect the engagement.
Kanade undergoes a subtle but significant development, shifting from a rigid, tradition-bound businessman to a more reflective observer. Although he begins as an adversary to Maid Latte, he ultimately becomes a regular visitor, studying how the employees interact with their customers to learn from their methods and improve his own business. This demonstrates a newfound openness to ideas outside his elite background. He also displays notable abilities beyond his administrative and business acumen. He is skilled in shiatsu, or acupressure, and is a talented artist, frequently creating sketches with Tora as his model, a talent that Takumi Usui himself acknowledges.
