Description
Matako Kijima, also known by the epithet Red Bullet or Crimson Bullet, is the only female member of the Kiheitai, an extremist revolutionary faction dedicated to dismantling the current order. She serves as a loyal subordinate to the group's leader, Shinsuke Takasugi, and her unwavering devotion to him is the central pillar of her character. Her nickname stems from her exceptional skill with a pair of pistols, making her a formidable combatant in close-quarters gunfights. She typically wears a revealing kimono and carries herself with a flashy, confrontational demeanor.

In terms of personality, Matako is quick-tempered and prone to loud, screeching outbursts when upset. This volatility is most evident in her clashes with Kagura, with whom she engages in a memorable spitting fight and later shoots through the shoulder during a confrontation aboard a Kiheitai ship. She is also openly derisive toward her colleague Henpeita Takechi, whom she calls senpai but frequently insults as a pervert and a lolicon for his leniency toward Kagura. Despite her abrasive exterior, she displays a more vulnerable, emotionally fragile side: she cries easily and is often shown shedding tears, particularly when her feelings for Takasugi are involved. Her loyalty borders on romantic infatuation, and she appears to harbor a crush on her leader, which motivates many of her actions.

Matako's role in the story is that of a supporting antagonist. She aids Takasugi's schemes and participates in the Kiheitai's operations, most notably during the Benizakura incident. In that arc, she is gravely wounded by Nizo Okada after he loses control and goes on a rampage, an event that underscores the danger of the group's violent methods. Her key relationships extend to other members of the Kiheitai: she is fiercely protective of Takasugi's interests and does not hesitate to chastise allies like Nizo when they act against those interests. Her dynamic with Takechi is one of mutual annoyance, though they continue to work together. Outside the faction, she is directly hostile toward Kagura and the Yorozuya, viewing them as obstacles.

Over the course of the series, Matako shows some development, as she survives prolonged conflicts including the final battles against the Altana Liberation Army, proving her resilience and combat prowess. She is not simply a weak or comic character; she holds her own on the front lines and endures until the end, revealing a toughness that balances her emotional fragility. Her name is loosely based on the historical samurai Kijima Matabei of the Bakumatsu era, reflecting the series' pattern of drawing from real figures.

Notable abilities include her expert marksmanship with dual guns, allowing her to engage multiple opponents at range with speed and accuracy. She is also physically agile and capable of surviving serious injuries. Her emotional volatility can be a weakness, but it also fuels her ferocity in battle. Overall, Matako Kijima is a passionate, loyal, and hot-headed fighter whose devotion to Takasugi defines her path, and she remains a memorable presence within the Kiheitai as both a comic relief and a serious combatant.
