Movie
Description
Okada Nizou, also known as Nizou the Butcher or Manslayer Nizou, is a blind assassin and swordsman who appears as a primary antagonist in Gintama: The Movie, the film adaptation of the Benizakura storyline. He is a member of the Kiheitai, an extremist faction devoted to destruction, and serves directly under the faction's leader Shinsuke Takasugi. Nizou lost his sight at a younger age, and in response his other senses, particularly his sense of smell and hearing, sharpened to an extraordinary degree. This keen perception allows him to fight with deadly precision despite his blindness, and he is a master of iaijutsu, the art of swift sword drawing, capable of cutting down an opponent before the victim can even perceive the blade leaving its sheath.
In terms of personality, Nizou is a ruthless and cold-blooded killer. He describes himself as having lived in darkness for so long that he began to perceive a kind of inner light radiating from other people, a light too faint for ordinary human eyes to see, and he murders his victims in an attempt to witness that light shine at the moment of their death. His worldview is bleak and nihilistic, closely aligned with Takasugi's desire to tear down the world and everything within it. He approaches his work with an eerie calm, viewing killing not as an act of malice but as a means of glimpsing something meaningful in a world he finds dark and empty.
Within the story of the film, Nizou first crosses paths with the protagonist Gintoki Sakata during a confrontation in which Gintoki shatters his sword, a humiliation that sets the stage for his return. Seeking greater power, Nizou later acquires the Benizakura, a legendary demonic blade that he uses to gravely wound both Gintoki and the revolutionary Kotaro Katsura. The sword acts like a parasitic organism, fusing with his arm and slowly consuming his body, transforming his flesh and driving him into a frenzy. He reveals that much of his torso has been replaced with cybernetic modifications, further blurring the line between man and machine as the blade tightens its hold over him. This arc forms the core of his character development: a proud and disciplined killer is progressively stripped of his humanity and reduced to a crazed monster ruled by the weapon he sought to master. He is ultimately defeated by Gintoki in a final battle, and although his exact fate is left uncertain, he is presumed to have perished as a result of the Benizakura's effects.
His most notable abilities include his blindingly fast iaijutsu, his heightened senses that compensate for his lack of sight, and the fearsome combat power granted by the Benizakura, which grants him tremendous strength and durability even as it destroys him from within. His relationships are defined by his loyalty to Takasugi and his clashes with Gintoki and Katsura, who stand as his chief opponents. The character's name is roughly modeled on Okada Izo, a historical assassin from the late Edo period.
