Description
Lucifer is a high-ranking demon who embodies the sin of pride in the series. He was originally an angel known as the Bringer of Light or the Morning Star before he was cast down to Earth for attempting to overthrow God. He has a contract with Tomiko Senba. In the human world, due to the influence of an anti-demon barrier, he appears in a chibi form resembling a koala with gray fur. Despite this cute appearance, he is a conceited and arrogant character with an overwhelming sense of self-importance, carrying himself with the ego of a rock star. In his true demonic form in hell, he is a charismatic figure with a flamboyant appearance, featuring elaborate tattoos including a modified phrase on his shoulder that reads God fuck your ass, a snake tattoo on his arm that can move and act independently, and an apple tattoo on his chest. He often wears leather pants and sunglasses, reinforcing his flashy persona.
His primary ability is the power to manipulate time, allowing him to accelerate, stop, or rewind the flow of time for a target. He is also known for attempting to demonstrate his guitar playing skills, though his koala paws make this difficult. His motivation largely revolves around his immense pride and self-adoration. He views himself as a bundle of limitless potential and expects admiration from others, including other demons. In the demon world, he is such a significant figure that even the demon Azazel seeks his autograph. His role in the story is to represent the fall of a supreme being, as his immense power is neutralized by the rules of the human world, creating a comedic contrast between his grand self-image and his powerless, cute koala form.
Key relationships include his contract with Tomiko Senba, whom he became obsessed with due to her beauty and used his time manipulation ability to make her immortal, treating her as a special possession. He has a fierce rivalry with the demon Beelzebub, with the two having engaged in conflicts severe enough to threaten the destruction of the demon world, often triggered by Lucifer repeatedly saying things Beelzebub considers taboo. Azazel views Lucifer with admiration and awe. The detective Akutabe is someone even Lucifer fears, as Akutabe's brutal methods and magic overpower him completely. He was summoned by Rinko Sakuma during a fight with Beelzebub, which resulted in his koala transformation. Over the course of the series, Lucifer does not undergo significant character development, remaining consistently arrogant and prideful, but he is repeatedly humbled by the constraints of the human world and his encounters with Akutabe, highlighting the gap between his self-perception and his actual situation.
