OVA
Description
Patty Crew is a young esper girl who appears in the anime Zettai Karen Children and its spin-off The Unlimited: Hyoubu Kyousuke. She is roughly the same age as the series' main trio and is a member of P.A.N.D.R.A., the espers' organization led by Hyoubu Kyousuke. She has blonde hair tied back with a headband, blue eyes, and her name is derived from the English word for particle.
Her background begins with the criminal organization Black Phantom. Originally a member of that group, she was used as a weapon and was dispatched to Japan as an assassin. During her mission, the plane she was traveling on was attacked by P.A.N.D.R.A. members, and after escaping she engaged them in battle. Her abilities caused difficulty for the opposing side, but Kaoru, working in disguise alongside the P.A.N.D.R.A. members, managed to break Black Phantom's control over her through a boost technique. However, because the release was not performed through the Children's own triple boost, the mind-control self-destruct programming remained active, and after her defeat she attempted to take her own life. Momiji stopped her by forcibly knocking her unconscious. Hyoubu later speculated that the incomplete success of the boost was the reason this programming survived. Hyoubu subsequently removed the brainwashing completely, but by that point Patty had lost her past memories and her will to live. In an attempt to rehabilitate her, the method used to help Bullet and Tim, two other former Black Phantom victims who had recovered by becoming otaku, was copied, and Kuromaki tried to treat her with healing dreams. The attempt did not go as intended, and Patty was instead shown what are described as rotten dreams, which awakened in her a strong interest in male-male romance pairings and restored her drive to live. She then became a full member of P.A.N.D.R.A.
In terms of personality, Patty is normally taciturn and composed, with a mature and quiet atmosphere, and she rarely says much. Her demeanor changes dramatically when her hobby is involved. She has a deep interest in yaoi pairings and will become visibly excited when she sees male members of P.A.N.D.R.A., or even male members of B.A.B.E.L., in questionable situations. Her mind frequently invents pairings based on the interactions of the people around her. She draws dōjinshi as a hobby, attends comic conventions and otaku-oriented places such as Akihabara, reads Jump, and has broad interests that include moe content and trains. She has also shown enthusiasm at a maid cafe staffed entirely by male maids. Despite her otaku tendencies, she is caring and practical in daily life, and she makes lunch boxes for other members, including character-themed bento known as pain bento. She carries herself with a composed exterior and is described as having a good figure, which other characters such as Mio and Kazura have noted.
Her motivations center on rebuilding her life after being freed from Black Phantom's control. Having lost her memories and initially having no desire to keep living, she found a new purpose through her hobbies and through belonging to P.A.N.D.R.A. She views her current circumstances positively and focuses on enjoying her interests and supporting those around her. She feels a sense of empathy for Bullet, Tim, and Yuri, whose fates were also twisted by Black Phantom, and she relates to their experiences.
Her role in the story shifts over time. She is first introduced as an enemy asset that Black Phantom intends to use to destroy P.A.N.D.R.A., and she becomes the target of a rescue mission involving Kaoru, Momiji, Kazura, Kagari, Mio, and Momotarou. After her rescue and rehabilitation, she joins P.A.N.D.R.A. and appears alongside its members in both combat and everyday settings. In the middle school portion of the story, she transfers into the Children's class along with other P.A.N.D.R.A. members and participates in normal school life. In the spin-off The Unlimited: Hyoubu Kyousuke, she is the only member of the younger P.A.N.D.R.A. group to appear prominently, and she works as the bartender aboard the organization's ship, the Catastrophe. She is also shown to be well liked by small children and makes a character-decorated cake for Hyoubu's birthday.
Her notable ability is a teleportation-based composite power that allows her to transform her own body into particles. She can use this state to restrain opponents, render herself immune to physical attacks, and see through objects by passing her particles through them. She considers herself exceptionally strong at controlling particles and on her first appearance was able to overwhelm Momiji, Kagari, Kazura, and Momotarou simultaneously, although the P.A.N.D.R.A. side had intended to appear to struggle in that encounter.
Her key relationships within the story include her bond with the other young P.A.N.D.R.A. members, particularly Mio, with whom she is often seen spending time. Because of the group's internal hierarchy, she sometimes has to catch herself before calling Mio a senior despite acting as classmates. She sympathizes with Bullet and Tim, who recovered through similar circumstances, and with Yuri, who once asked her for romantic advice regarding Kaoru. Her relationship with Hyoubu is marked by quiet loyalty and an amused detachment; when Hyoubu was unconscious and another person suggested that someone give him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, Hyoubu begged Patty to help him avoid the situation, and she simply replied that she wanted to draw it instead.
Her development across the story takes her from a brainwashed weapon with no memories and no desire to live to a settled and active member of P.A.N.D.R.A. who pursues her interests openly. She becomes involved in school activities such as the school festival, where she serves as the initiator, director, and scriptwriter for a class play, adapting the story of the Nightingale and the Rose into a happy ending based on Minamoto's suggestion. Through her hobbies, her friendships, and her role within P.A.N.D.R.A., she establishes a stable and enthusiastic place for herself in the world.
