Description
Alice Cartelet is a British girl who transfers to a high school in Japan and lives with the family of her close friend Shinobu Omiya. She has a very petite frame, standing only 139 centimeters tall, with long, lightly curled blonde hair that she typically wears in pigtails, one of which is held by a hairpin given to her by Shinobu. Her eyes are bright blue. Due to her small stature, she is often mistaken for an elementary school student and is sensitive about her height. Alice initially appears quiet and shy, especially around adults or unfamiliar situations, but she is kind and compassionate toward her friends. She can also be remarkably blunt and honest when something upsets her, and she has a childish side that emerges when she is frightened or teased, such as by dogs or remarks about her height. She is proud and may pretend to have poor Japanese language skills to avoid unwanted conversation. Her voice is soothing, and she sings well. Alice developed a deep love for Japanese culture after Shinobu stayed at her home in England, and her passion is so strong that she is often described as being more Japanese than the Japanese themselves. Her primary motivation for moving to Japan was to attend the same high school as Shinobu, to whom she is intensely devoted. She craves Shinobu’s attention and becomes jealous or possessive when Shinobu shows interest in other people, including their friend Karen Kujou and their teacher. Alice shares a history with Karen as childhood friends, though she sometimes sees Karen as a rival for Shinobu’s attention. With Aya Komichi, she bonds over their similar reserved personalities and academic strengths. She is friendly with Yoko Inokuma but often delivers kind insults about Yoko’s lack of intelligence. She lives with the Omiya family and has a cordial relationship with Shinobu’s older sister Isami, though she dislikes it when Isami teases her or gets too close to Shinobu. Academically, Alice is one of the most studious members of her friend group, though she is not athletically inclined. Over time, her Japanese language skills improve dramatically, and she grows more confident while remaining sensitive about her height. A significant event occurs when she and Shinobu are placed in different classes in their second year, which initially distresses her but ultimately reinforces that their bond remains strong. Later, nearing graduation, she struggles to express her plan to return to England for university, fearing separation from Shinobu, until Shinobu decides to pursue studies in England alongside her. Alice settles into university life in England with Shinobu, later hosting visits from their friends.
