TV-Series
Description
Fumiaki Uchida is an adult time traveler sent from the year 2012 to the year 1999. In the future he comes from, humanity is on the brink of extinction following an alien invasion, and his mission is to prevent that catastrophe by finding and neutralizing an item or person known as the Nostradamus Key. He is a time agent, designated as No. 6, after his predecessor was killed. Upon arriving in 1999, he adopts the alias Minoru Abe and poses as a Japanese history teacher at Waldstein Academy, the titular Occult Academy, to maintain his cover.
Fumiaki’s background is marked by a dramatic shift from a celebrated childhood to a disappointing adulthood. As a young boy, he possessed genuine psychokinetic abilities, most famously demonstrated by bending spoons. He became a famous television personality under the nickname Bunmei. His popularity, however, came at a steep price, as his mother became obsessed with his fame and fortune, restricting him from having a normal social life and exploiting his gift for her own gain. Eventually, Fumiaki lost his psychic powers, and by 2012, he was widely considered a fraud, an ordinary man living in the shadow of his extraordinary childhood.
His personality in 1999 is a direct consequence of this difficult past. He is initially portrayed as a cowardly and weak-willed individual, often running from danger and prioritizing his own safety. To mask his insecurities and fear, he frequently lies or distorts the truth to make himself appear cooler or more competent than he actually is. He is easily distracted and can be manipulated, as shown by his infatuation with a young woman named Mikaze, which clouds his judgment. Despite these unheroic traits, Fumiaki is not entirely without merit. He cares for his students and will take risks for them when truly pushed, revealing a core of decency beneath his fearful exterior. His favorite food is curry rice, which he eats with chopsticks.
Fumiaki’s primary motivation is to complete his mission and return to his own time, but he is driven more by a sense of duty thrust upon him than by innate heroism. His role in the story is to be the foil and eventual partner to the main protagonist, Maya Kumashiro, the strong-willed and cynical new principal of the academy who initially despises the occult. Their relationship is tense at first, as Maya sees him as a pathetic liar and a coward. A turning point occurs when she witnesses a vision of his lonely, exploited childhood, which parallels her own issues with her occult-obsessed father. This shared experience of painful isolation allows Maya to soften toward him, and they form an effective, if bickering, team to investigate occult incidents in their search for the Nostradamus Key. His other significant relationship is with Mikaze, a seemingly sweet waitress who later reveals herself to be a powerful black mage manipulating him for her own sinister ends.
Fumiaki’s character development is the most significant in the series. He begins as an anti-hero, a man who runs from his problems and seems useless. Over the course of his investigation with Maya, he is forced to confront his own fears and failures. The greatest test of his growth comes in the final episode, when it is revealed that the Nostradamus Key is not an object or another person, but the event of his adult self meeting his younger self. This meeting creates the dimensional rift that will allow the alien invasion. Faced with this truth and watching the invasion begin, the older Fumiaki finally casts aside his cowardice. He borrows a spoon from his younger self, which is the symbol of his lost power, and his psychokinetic abilities return. In a final heroic act, he uses this regained power to single-handedly destroy the alien machines and close the rift, sacrificing himself to save the future. His final words are a request for Maya to take care of his younger self, ensuring the boy he once was has a better life. In the new, peaceful timeline that is created, Fumiaki is alive and has married Maya, taking her as his wife.
