TV-Series
Description
Fumiaki Uchida, more commonly known by his childhood nickname Bunmei-kun, is the male protagonist of the story. His true identity is that of a time agent from the year 2012, sent back to the year 1999 on a critical mission. In a future timeline, aliens have conquered Earth following a catastrophic dimensional rift that occurred at the Waldstein Academy, also known as the Occult Academy. The human resistance managed to salvage alien technology to create a time travel device, and Fumiaki, designated Agent Number 6, was dispatched to the past to prevent this future from ever happening. His mission is to locate and destroy an artifact known as the Nostradamus Key, which is the cause of the dimensional rift.
In his childhood, Fumiaki was a famous television personality known for his supposed psychic ability to bend spoons, which earned him the nickname Bunmei. As an adult, he is a stark contrast to his former child-star persona. He is frequently portrayed as bumbling, cowardly, and somewhat unreliable, often becoming a source of comedic relief. He is easily distracted, particularly by women and creature comforts like good food, which leads him to shirk his duties as a time agent. His personality in the first half of the series is marked by a lack of confidence and a tendency to make excuses, making him seem like an unlikely hero. To blend in at the academy in 1999, he assumes the alias Abe Minoru and works as a history teacher.
His role in the story is directly tied to Maya Kumashiro, the daughter of the deceased principal of the academy. Despite Maya’s aggressive hatred for the occult, she is reluctantly forced to team up with Fumiaki to search for the Nostradamus Key. Their relationship is central to the narrative and is defined by conflict and a sharp contrast in personalities. Maya is headstrong, competent, and knowledgeable about the supernatural, while Fumiaki is timid and ineffective. She frequently reacts to his incompetence with physical violence, throwing objects at him or hitting him. Maya is the one who pushes the investigation forward, often taking the lead while Fumiaki lags behind. Despite this rocky partnership, a complex and developing bond forms between them as the series progresses.
Key relationships also include Chihiro Kawashima, the former principal's assistant, who develops an intense and comedic infatuation with Fumiaki. Another significant relationship is with Mikaze Nakagawa, a local waitress whom Fumiaki becomes romantically interested in, a distraction that often pulls his focus away from his mission.
Fumiaki’s character undergoes development throughout the series. He begins as a weak and often unlikable figure who is terrified of his mission and hides behind lies. As he faces the various occult threats of 1999 and is constantly challenged by Maya’s determination, he is forced to confront his own inadequacies. He eventually experiences moments of redemption, moving from a position of pure cowardice to one of genuine courage and selflessness, ultimately fulfilling the duties expected of a time agent.
Despite his reputation as a psychic, his primary ability to bend spoons proves to be a failure as an adult, much to Maya’s irritation. His true asset is the advanced cellphone he carries from the future, built from alien technology. When the user takes a photograph of an object while thinking about the year 2012, the phone displays a vision of that object's fate in the future. If the object appears intact, it is identified as the Nostradamus Key that must be destroyed. Aside from this device, he possesses no special combat skills or psychic powers in the past, making him entirely dependent on Maya and his own wits to survive.
