Description
Kōhei Hasekura is the male protagonist of Fortune Arterial: Akai Yakusoku. He is a fifth-year student at Shuchikan Academy, a prestigious six-year school on Tamatsu Island that combines junior high and high school levels. Due to his parents' work, he has moved schools and cities multiple times throughout his life, a constant upheaval that has shaped his outlook and behavior. In order to put an end to this pattern of repeated transfers, he makes the decision to enroll at Shuchikan Academy, a full-boarding school, where he intends to settle and stay for a considerable period.
As a result of his frequent relocations, Kōhei developed a habit of avoiding close friendships. He reasoned that since he would inevitably have to move away soon after making friends, it was less painful not to form deep bonds in the first place. This protective detachment is a defining trait at the start of the story, but his arrival at Shuchikan Academy marks a turning point. Returning to Tamatsu Island, where he had lived briefly seven years earlier, he reconnects with childhood friends Kanade Yuki and her younger sister Haruna Yuki, and gradually begins to open up to others for the first time in years.
Personality-wise, Kōhei is generally easygoing, agreeable, and accommodating. He is kind and considerate, and he tends to act as a stabilizing presence among the more eccentric personalities around him. He is also logical, practical, and careful in his decision-making, often analyzing situations before committing to a course of action. Once he sets his mind on something, he demonstrates strong determination and follow-through, as seen when he takes on the role of sports festival executive committee chairman and later the cultural festival committee responsibilities. He is not one to seek out conflict but does not shy away from taking responsibility when it is placed on him.
His primary motivation throughout the story is to find a place where he truly belongs and to protect the people he has come to care about. This sense of responsibility deepens significantly once he is drawn into the hidden supernatural world of the school. After transferring, he discovers that Erika Sendo, the student council vice-president and a student in the class next door, is a vampire. Along with her older brother, Iori Sendo, who is the student council president, Erika reveals the truth about vampires to Kōhei. He is initially offered the chance to have his memory of this revelation erased, but after seeing Erika in distress, he chooses to retain the knowledge and keep the secret, a pivotal decision that sets the course for his involvement in the story. Shortly afterward, he accepts an invitation to join the student council.
Within the story, Kōhei serves as the central viewpoint character through whom the audience experiences the mysteries of Shuchikan Academy and the vampire lore that surrounds the Sendo family. He acts as the moral compass and emotional anchor of the group, frequently mediating between the more impulsive or secretive members of the student council. His role is not that of a physically powerful hero but of an ordinary human who navigates an extraordinary situation through empathy, perseverance, and loyalty.
Kōhei’s relationships with the other characters are central to his development. His bond with Erika Sendo is the emotional core of the story. Their connection evolves from initial awkwardness and misunderstanding, largely caused by Iori Sendo’s mischief, into a deep mutual trust and romantic attachment. He becomes her confidant, learning about the burden of her vampiric nature and the isolation it imposes on her. With Iori, Kōhei shares a teasing but ultimately respectful dynamic. Iori tests him repeatedly, but Kōhei earns his respect through his integrity and refusal to back down when it matters. His childhood friendship with the Yuki sisters grounds him in the island’s past and provides warmth and familiarity. Kanade Yuki, the dormitory resident advisor, is cheerful and high-spirited, while Haruna Yuki, his classmate, is bright and helpful, although she has lost early childhood memories, including those of Kōhei. He also forms bonds with the other student council members: the shy and delicate Shiro Togi, her protective brother Seichiro Togi, and the quiet and distant Kiriha Kuze, a vampire servant whose immortality and lack of taste reflect the darker side of the supernatural world.
In terms of personal development, Kōhei undergoes a clear shift from emotional self-isolation to active engagement. His habit of avoiding deep connections is gradually broken as he becomes integrated into the student council and the small community on the island. He learns to trust others and to accept that staying in one place and forming bonds is worth the risk of future loss. By the end of the series, he has fully committed himself to protecting Erika and the life they are building together.
Regarding notable abilities, Kōhei does not possess supernatural powers of his own for most of the story. He relies on his practical intelligence, his ability to remain calm under pressure, and his physical stamina. However, in the manga continuation and extended material, his blood is revealed to be special. After learning why this is the case, he consumes Red Crystal shards that were originally made by a character named Marehito using his own blood. This grants Kōhei enhanced athletic abilities and also allows him to access Marehito’s memories. Ultimately, he takes responsibility for helping Erika become a normal human and vows to stay with her forever. In the anime adaptation itself, these supernatural developments are less emphasized, and Kōhei remains defined primarily by his human qualities of loyalty, courage, and compassion.
