Description
Matsunaga Hisahide is a figure drawn from the Sengoku period of Japanese history, reimagined in the anime Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings as a cunning and nihilistic warlord. He is known throughout the series as a man of treachery and one of the few individuals who dared to defy the overwhelming ambition of Oda Nobunaga. His character is introduced as a mysterious antagonist who operates from the shadows, wielding influence through manipulation, arson, and demolition rather than direct confrontation.

Hisahide is defined by a cold and detached personality. He holds a cynical view of the world, believing that human nature is fundamentally evil and that only strength truly matters. This philosophy drives him to act without remorse, using any tactic no matter how underhanded to achieve his goals. He is depicted as a sadistic and nihilistic figure who seeks to spread chaos and destruction across Japan purely for his own amusement. His calm demeanor rarely breaks, even in the heat of battle, underscoring his unsettling nature.

His primary motivation is not conquest in the traditional sense but rather the pursuit of personal gratification through disorder. He finds pleasure in the suffering of others and in the art of betrayal, often switching allegiances when it serves his interests. He commands a group of mercenaries loyal only to his wealth, using them to extort villages and burn settlements. In the story, he serves as a primary antagonist in certain arcs, most notably as a rival to Katakura Kojuurou of the Date clan. He manipulates the Miyoshi Trio to fight on his behalf and eventually meets his end at his own castle during a confrontation with the Date army.

His notable abilities center on a unique fighting style that combines swordsmanship with explosives. He carries a blade and uses gunpowder, which he can ignite with a simple snap of his fingers. His movements are described as sinisterly slow yet deceptive, allowing him to close distances with quick strides. His attacks are heavily fire-based, reflecting his specialization in arson and demolition. In terms of role, Hisahide is a disruptive and destructive force, embodying the darker, more chaotic elements of the warring states era. His development is minimal, as he remains consistently driven by his belief in evil and chaos until his final moments.
