Description
Mōri Motonari is a strategist and daimyo of the Chūgoku region and the leader of the Mōri clan. He is depicted as a young, genius tactician with a cold, calculating personality. His primary motivation is victory itself, which he pursues with absolute pragmatism. He views his soldiers as expendable pawns and is willing to sacrifice them without hesitation in pursuit of his objectives. He is also highly prideful regarding his intelligence, and he finds failure unacceptable. His ultimate goal is not necessarily personal rule over all of Japan, but rather the prosperity of his home province of Aki, and he is willing to treat even his own life as a disposable resource to achieve this. In the events of the anime, he is a supporting character whose schemes often place him in opposition to other major powers, particularly the Chōsokabe clan. He navigates the shifting alliances of the era, sometimes serving as a nominal ally to larger forces while advancing his own hidden agenda. His key relationships are largely transactional; he views other characters as either obstacles or tools to be used. He is depicted as having a rivalry with Chōsokabe Motochika, as their ambitions and territories clash. While he presents an utterly emotionless front, occasional moments suggest a deeper, more solitary interior, though his true feelings remain enigmatic. In terms of notable abilities, Motonari is a peerless strategist, but he also possesses formidable combat skills. He wields a unique ring-shaped blade that can be split into two semicircular blades, which he uses for direct slashing attacks and as a thrown weapon. Beyond direct combat, he is a master of traps, using techniques involving green light circles to ensnare and damage his opponents. He also has the ability to set up barriers, summon archers to fire from a distance, and create illusions of himself, showcasing a fighting style based on control, manipulation, and area denial. His ruthless nature is mechanically reflected in his ability to damage his own allies with his attacks, as he cares only for the outcome of the battle.
