Description
Kafuka Fūra is the student number fifteen in Class 2-F, defined by an overwhelmingly positive outlook that allows her to find something good in any circumstance or to outright deny that anything bad is happening. She stands as the polar opposite of her teacher, Nozomu Itoshiki, who sees only darkness and despair. Kafuka displays this optimism through actions like interpreting a suicide attempt by hanging as nothing more than an effort to become taller and reframing the act of stalking as a form of deep love. Her appearance almost invariably features a smile, short black hair, and a hairpin fastened in one of her bangs. She enjoys giving whimsical nicknames to people, much to their irritation, and harbors an odd fascination with extraterrestrials, once building a landing strip for UFOs from a race she calls the Porororoka.

Beneath this cheerful surface lies a distinctly disquieting side. Her name, Kafuka Fūra, is a pen name that alludes to the author Franz Kafka, an irony given her sunny disposition. Her cheerfulness conceals a traumatic past. Her father frequently attempted suicide by hanging, which Kafuka calls making himself taller, and is currently unemployed. Her mother was once possessed by demons and required an exorcism. It is also implied that Kafuka may have attempted self-harm, as her wrists have been shown wrapped in bandages. Furthermore, her actions occasionally reveal a much darker personality, such as watching the school burn down with a satisfied grin or disguising herself as a college student to cook for her teacher and his nephew, an act which gave them food poisoning. Other characters are mortally terrified of her; for example, when Kafuka teaches the shy Meru about communication through eye contact, Meru can sense only bloodlust in her eyes. Her presence and gaze frighten another character so deeply that they try to flee.

Kafuka is a natural-born leader who easily rallies people behind her words, providing a foil against Nozomu's rants and despair spiels. She is friendly, easygoing, and confident, yet she seems to know exactly what to say to make people feel the way she wants them to, and her ability to charm people often gives way to unease as they learn more about her. One of her motivations, drawn from a Buddhist text, is to become a god in the next life. This led to an incident in which she offered herself to be eaten by a tiger in pursuit of that goal. Kafuka also has a number of disguises, including a college student who lives next door to Nozomu and a girl who attends a school nearby. She is very skillful with knives, and it is hinted that this skill is not limited to cooking.

In a major revelation, it is disclosed that Kafuka had died prior to the beginning of the series and that her organs were donated to several characters who make up the majority of Nozomu's class. However, she was too optimistic to die and thus chose to possess a different female classmate in every scene of the series. Kafuka continues this cycle of possession to allow her to live on as Nozomu's wife. To sustain this union, all the girls who received her organs must live together under one roof and undergo a rotation of divorces and marriages, causing the group to resemble a harem. Her real name is believed to be Akagi An, inferred from being called An-chan in a flashback and the surname Akagi appearing in an attendance book, a possible reference to Akage no An, the Japanese title for Anne of Green Gables.
