Description
Meru Otonashi is a student in class 2-F, assigned student number sixteen. She is a girl of short stature and fair skin, with medium-length black hair and brown eyes. Her family name, Otonashi, means soundless, and her given name, Meru, derives from the loan word for mail, while her email address translates to full of shyness. She comes from a wealthy family with an overprotective father who calls her MeruMeru.

Meru is essentially mute. She does not speak verbally and communicates exclusively through text messages and emails sent from her cell phone. When she does attempt to speak aloud, she can produce only weak sounds or squeaks, and any real effort to vocalize causes her to uncontrollably sputter in a nonsensical, horrific language. Despite her quiet and innocent appearance, the content of her written messages is consistently vicious and abusive. She is deeply attached to her phone and becomes genuinely distressed when separated from it or when she finds herself in an area with no signal.

Her role in the story is that of one of the many eccentric students in her homeroom class, each of whom embodies a specific social or personal extreme. Her inability to speak and reliance on text to express hostility serves as a recurring character gag that satirizes both shyness and passive-aggressive communication. She interacts with other characters almost entirely through written messages, and the contrast between her delicate look and her caustic texts is a defining trait.

Her father is the most prominent figure in her background, being overprotective and able to arrange unusual accommodations, such as setting up an audition for people to dub her voice in real time. Within the class, she interacts with her teacher Nozomu Itoshiki and her fellow students, though her relationships are mediated almost entirely through her phone. There is no significant character development depicted; she remains consistently defined by her muteness and her harsh text-based communication throughout the series. Her notable ability is her reliance on text messaging as her sole means of expression, using it to deliver sharp, insulting remarks that contrast with her meek appearance.
