Description
Klaus Grad is introduced in the second season of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 as a high-ranking operative of the resistance group Katharon, which opposes the coercive unification policies of the Earth Sphere Federation and its elite military unit, the A-Laws. Initially active in the European branch, he is assigned to lead the Middle Eastern third branch, putting him on the front line of the conflict. Pragmatic and compassionate, Klaus is driven by a desire to overthrow the corrupt Federation government and build a just and orderly global society. He cares deeply for his comrades and the civilians suffering under the A-Laws crackdown, particularly those in the Middle East.
Klaus acts as the primary intermediary between Katharon and Celestial Being. After a Katharon rescue mission nearly ends in disaster and is saved by the intervention of the Gundams, he approaches Sumeragi Lee Noriega to propose a formal alliance. While Celestial Being refuses a direct partnership to maintain its operational independence, Klaus secures a pragmatic agreement of mutual support. Throughout the season, he provides Celestial Being with vital supplies, shelter in the Arabian desert, and combat support, playing a crucial role in their campaign against the A-Laws and later the Innovators.
Following the defeat of the A-Laws, Klaus recognizes that the armed phase of the resistance is over. He makes the pivotal decision to disband Katharon and transitions into legitimate politics, becoming a member of the reformed Earth Sphere Federation Assembly. He works within the system to ensure the new global order lives up to its ideals. His role evolves further in the feature film A Wakening of the Trailblazer, where he serves as a presidential envoy and holds the highest civilian authority aboard the Sumeragi-class exploration ship during humanity's first contact with an extraterrestrial lifeform.
Klaus possesses sharp strategic and organizational skills that make him an effective leader in both armed resistance and politics. While he rarely pilots a mobile suit in the main series, supplementary material confirms he is a highly skilled pilot who maintains a custom AEU Enact for his own use. He is closely associated with Shirin Bakhtiar, a fellow Katharon operative, with whom he shares a deep personal bond and later a family. His evolution from a regional guerilla commander to a global political figure demonstrates his adaptability and unwavering commitment to shaping a better future.
