Description
Lyle Dylandy is the real name of the second person to bear the codename Lockon Stratos in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season. He is the younger identical twin brother of Neil Dylandy, the original Lockon Stratos who died at the end of the first season. Born in Ireland in AD 2283, Lyle had a younger sister named Amy. A terrorist attack killed his parents and sister while Lyle was not present. Unlike Neil, who was driven by hatred for terrorists, Lyle’s emotional response was a sense of emptiness. As the younger twin, he frequently faced unfavorable comparisons to his brother and developed an inferiority complex, eventually moving away from home during junior high school.
Before joining Celestial Being, Lyle was a member of Katharon, the anti-A-LAWS resistance group, where he worked as an intelligence gatherer. After Neil’s death, he was recruited by Setsuna F. Seiei to succeed his brother as a Gundam Meister. Lyle accepted the role and the name Lockon Stratos to honor Neil’s memory. He pilots the GN-006 Cherudim Gundam, the successor to his brother’s Dynames, and later the GN-010 Gundam Zabanya in the film Awakening of the Trailblazer.
Lyle’s personality is more reserved and less openly cheerful than his brother’s, though he retains a friendly and easygoing demeanor. He does not hold grudges and is capable of letting go of negative experiences, allowing him to focus on present concerns and future outcomes. He is also portrayed as something of a womanizer, flirting with Feldt Grace and entering a romantic relationship with Anew Returner, a crew member of the Ptolemaios. That relationship ends tragically when Anew is revealed to be an Innovade spy for Ribbons Almark; she attempts to kill Lyle, and he is forced to kill her in self-defense, an event that leaves lasting emotional scars.
In combat, Lyle possesses exceptionally high combat sense and long-range shooting skills inherited from his brother. He favors multiple guns and ranged support tactics rather than pure sniping, and he pilots Cherudim Gundam with its GN sniper rifle and GN missile pods. Despite initially lacking his brother’s experience, he proves himself a capable and adaptable pilot. He struggles to step out of Neil’s shadow and carry the weight of the Lockon Stratos name, but over time he grows into the role and becomes a core member of the team, coordinating effectively with the other Meisters.
Lyle’s motivation stems from a desire to make a difference in the world and a strong sense of justice, similar to his brother, but without the burden of vengeance. He continues to fight alongside Celestial Being against the A-LAWS and the Innovators, and in the later movie he participates in humanity’s first contact with the ELS, protecting Earth alongside his comrades. His development is marked by his journey from living in his brother’s shadow to making the identity of Lockon Stratos his own, tempered by the trauma of Anew’s betrayal and his own growing commitment to the mission.
