TV Special
Description
Kyousuke Kasuga is the central male protagonist of the 1985 pilot anime, which serves as an early adaptation of the broader story. He is a junior high school student who, along with his younger twin sisters, possesses supernatural abilities collectively called the Power. These powers identify him and his family as espers, and they are strictly forbidden from using them in public to avoid discovery and forced relocation. In the pilot, Kyousuke goes on a beach vacation with his friends, including Madoka Ayukawa and Hikaru Hiyama, where the romantic tensions among the trio come to the forefront.
Kyousuke is portrayed as a gentle and conscientious young man, often displaying a mild and polite demeanor. He is somewhat of a goody-goody, as seen when he scolds Madoka for smoking in a earnest, slightly nerdy manner. However, his defining flaw is his indecisiveness, which lies at the heart of the love triangle. He is caught between his genuine romantic feelings for Madoka and his existing relationship with Hikaru, who has openly declared her affection for him. This inner conflict drives much of his behavior; he struggles to hurt either girl and often hesitates to make a clear choice, leading to moments of tension and misunderstanding.
His motivations are rooted in a desire for a normal, peaceful life. Having moved many times due to past incidents involving his powers, he hopes to settle down and avoid drawing attention. Yet his emotions repeatedly pull him into complicated situations. In the pilot, his role is to navigate the dynamics of the beach trip, where his interactions with Madoka deepen and Hikaru's flirtations with another boy create further complications. The key relationships are with Madoka, the enigmatic and tough girl he secretly loves, and Hikaru, the energetic and affectionate underclassman who considers him her darling. His younger cousin Kazuya also appears in the special, adding a layer of familial responsibility.
Over the course of the special, Kyousuke shows a capacity for growth through his quiet determination. When Madoka is in danger during a night swimming incident, he acts decisively and uses his powers to save her, revealing that his gentleness coexists with a protective instinct. His powers include teleportation, telekinesis, and a form of time-slipping that activates when he falls from heights. He can also amplify his own hearing, hypnotize himself or others, and manipulate mechanical devices. In moments of extreme stress, particularly when Madoka is threatened, his power can manifest as raw energy strong enough to shatter walls. Despite these abilities, Kyousuke remains fundamentally an ordinary teenager struggling with love, friendship, and the burden of secrecy.
