Description
Father Yoshio Kanzaki is a 23-year-old Catholic priest who runs an orphanage in Otomo City. He is a childhood friend of the protagonist, Hayato Mikogami, having grown up alongside him at the same orphanage. Beneath his gentle and friendly exterior, Yoshio is secretly the vigilante known as the Skull Man, a mysterious figure who has been committing a series of murders throughout the city.

Yoshio is portrayed as a genuinely kind and affable individual in his daily life, opening his church to all and providing a home for orphaned children. He maintains a close friendship with Hayato and a cordial relationship with Maya Kuroshio, a young woman who volunteers at the orphanage and who is also the figurehead of the White Bell religious group. However, this warm personality conceals a darker purpose. As the Skull Man, Yoshio believes he must become a greater evil in order to fight evil, viewing his actions as a grim duty rather than something he takes pleasure in. He is a professional and efficient killer, ensuring his victims die swiftly without unnecessary suffering.

His sole motivation is to hunt down and kill humans who are in the process of transforming into mutants known as G.R.O., who are created by the Otomo Conglomerate through its religious front, the White Bell Association. Yoshio believes that once a person is fully transformed, they become monstrous and insane, and he sees killing them before this transformation is complete as a necessary mercy, even if they have not yet committed any crime. He is aided in his mission by two individuals, Rena and Tetsuro Shingyoji, who are incomplete mutants known as "Lost Numbers".

Yoshio became the Skull Man after discovering the ancient helmet in a military bunker during his time as a soldier. Upon donning the mask, he gained tremendous power and felt a deep conviction that he must use it to destroy the G.R.O. that the Otomo Concern was creating. For most of the story, the city believes the Skull Man is Tatsuo Kagura, a presumed-dead figure from a past lab accident, making Yoshio's true identity a major revelation. When Hayato finally learns the truth, Yoshio confesses everything to his old friend, expressing clear regret for his actions.

Key relationships define his tragic arc. His bond with Hayato is central, as they are close friends and former orphanage-mates, making Yoshio's secret identity a deep betrayal that Hayato must confront. He also shares a partnership with Rena and Tetsuro, who loyally serve him in his hunts. After a brutal battle with a team of elite cyborgs called the SIRKS, who were sent to retrieve the Skull Man suit, Yoshio is severely injured and Tetsuro is killed. Unable to move as the remaining SIRKS attack his church and orphanage, he is forced to watch as Hayato dons the Skull Man helmet to save Maya. Yoshio accepts his death with dignity, feeling it is the just punishment for the murders he has committed, and he passes away in his church.

As the Skull Man, Yoshio possesses superhuman abilities granted by the ancient helmet. His skills include enhanced strength and access to deadly weapons, which he uses to dispatch his targets with professional efficiency. He is also a skilled motorcyclist, often seen riding through the city at night.
