Description
Aono Morimiya is a central figure in the narrative, initially introduced as the older sister of the protagonist, Yorito Morimiya. She has a pale, sickly appearance with long, light blue or silver hair and red eyes. At the beginning of the story, she is a patient in a hospital, having been confined there for about three months due to a decline in her physical condition. Her hospital room is always kept dark, with the curtains perpetually drawn.

Her outward personality is cool, reserved, and taciturn, giving an impression of someone who is often annoyed or detached, particularly towards her brother. She shows very little emotion in her daily interactions. For example, whenever Yorito brings her a new doll, she will look at it and then throw it into a basket with seeming indifference. However, this is a facade, as she secretly collects them and treasures the very first doll Yorito ever gave her. Despite her cold exterior, she has a caring side, opening her heart to those close to her like Yorito, her friend Koyori Ishizuki, and Mana. She is skilled at making origami and is a proficient cook.

The story reveals that Aono's quiet life in the hospital masks a profound and tragic secret. She is not an ordinary human, but a Yaka, also known as a Calamity of the Night. Aono has existed for hundreds of years, having been transformed into a Yaka by her friend Matsuri Shihou after a devastating event in the distant past. Centuries ago, Aono was a human sacrifice, and during that time, she met and grew close to both Matsuri and the original Yorito, who was not her brother but a boy she deeply loved. When that Yorito died in an accident, a grief-stricken Aono attempted to take her own life. Matsuri, unable to bear the loss, saved her by turning her into an immortal Yaka.

Unable to accept her beloved Yorito's death, Aono used her unique supernatural abilities over paper to create a lifelike replica of him. This paper construct was given the memories and personality of the original Yorito, and Aono assumed the role of his older sister to maintain the illusion. Her primary motivation throughout the series is to protect this fabricated reality and keep the new Yorito by her side forever, as she cannot face the pain of losing him again. This desperate need to preserve her ideal world makes her hostile towards Matsuri, whose presence threatens to unravel the lie and reveal to Yorito that he is not truly human. Aono fears that if Yorito learns the truth, he will reject his own existence and leave her.

Aono's key relationships are defined by this central tragedy. Her bond with Yorito is one of obsessive, possessive love born from centuries of loneliness and grief. She is fiercely protective of him, to the point of manipulating his memories and actions. Her relationship with Matsuri is complex; they were once close friends, but Aono harbors deep resentment towards her for saving her as a Yaka, condemning her to an eternal life without the original Yorito. This resentment curdles into a bitter rivalry, as Aono sees Matsuri as a threat to her current happiness. Her friendship with the young Koyori Ishizuki is one of the few genuine and untainted connections she has, showing a softer, more patient side of her personality.

Throughout the story, Aono undergoes significant development. Initially presented as a frail, enigmatic girl, she is gradually revealed to be a powerful, tragic, and even antagonistic figure willing to go to great lengths to maintain her illusion. Her control over Yorito intensifies as she tries to eliminate Matsuri, leading to a final confrontation. In the end, she is forced to confront the truth of her brother's nature and her own grief. After a climactic battle, she is returned to her human form, losing her powers and the memories of her centuries as a Yaka, but finally able to live a normal life and see the blue sky she was once denied.

As a Yaka, Aono possesses several notable abilities. Her primary power is the manipulation of paper, which she can control with lethal precision. She can fold paper into intricate shapes, such as cranes, that can move on their own, or shape it into blades sharp enough to cut through solid objects. Her most remarkable feat is the creation of Yorito himself, a fully autonomous, lifelike construct made of paper, demonstrating a near-divine level of control over her power. Like all Yaka, she has superhuman physical abilities, rapid regeneration, and does not age. Her primary weakness is sunlight, which can wound her, and she is only able to move freely at night.
