Description
Hakuou, whose name loosely translates to "White Phoenix," is a prominent character in the Duel Masters Charge anime. This name directly reflects his choice of cards, as he is a specialist in the Light Civilization, a theme that remains consistent throughout his appearances. He is known by a few other nicknames, such as "Haku-chan" or simply "White," the latter of which becomes particularly significant during a specific story arc.

Hakuou's background is marked by both privilege and profound tragedy. He comes from a wealthy and prominent family of powerful duelists and is recognized as an intelligent and exceptionally skilled player with a strong winning streak. However, his early life was irrevocably changed when a mysterious duelist challenged him to a dangerous Kaijudo duel, a form of the game that makes the creatures physically manifest. Overconfident, Hakuou was nearly killed by the opponent's attack, but his mother pushed him out of the way and was fatally wounded in his place. This event instilled in him a deep guilt and a trauma-driven obsession with becoming stronger at any cost, a stark contrast to his naturally cheerful and friendly disposition.

In his original state, before the trauma corrupted his worldview, Hakuou is portrayed as a kindhearted and charismatic individual who loves dueling more than anything else. He is known to praise his opponents for their skill or well-constructed decks regardless of the duel's outcome, and his admirable nature makes him popular among his peers. However, the guilt over his mother's death led him to suppress this personality. He became a cold-hearted and ruthless duelist, believing that one's value is determined solely by their ability to win, often toying with opponents before turning the tables in a single, devastating turn. This internal conflict is his greatest weakness; his desire to overcome his regrets drives him to act in ways that contradict his naturally flawless image.

Hakuou serves as the primary rival to the protagonist, Shobu Kirifuda. At the start of their conflict, Hakuou is the undefeated champion of a dueling temple and the leader of an elite group known as the White Soldiers. Hakuou sees a reflection of his former innocent self in Shobu and seeks not just to defeat him, but to crush his spirit entirely to prove that his own harsh, power-driven philosophy is correct. Their intense rivalry culminates in a duel where Shobu refuses to abandon his friends for power, ultimately defeating Hakuou and showing him the true, fun nature of dueling, which allows Hakuou to return to his original, kindhearted self.

During the events of Duel Masters Charge, Hakuou is once again manipulated, this time being brainwashed by a villain named Zakira to become his pawn, assuming the antagonistic persona known as "White". Under this control, his personality reverts to its coldest and most ruthless state. In this form, he duels his friends, including his rival Kokujo, and uses a modified deck that incorporates Cross Gears. It is only through the intervention of his friends, particularly a duel with Mimi that forces him to confront the damage he has caused, that he is able to break free from this brainwashing and return to his true self once more.

Hakuou's key relationships are central to his character arc. His bond with Shobu is the catalyst for his initial redemption, as Shobu embodies the joy of dueling that Hakuou had lost. He also shares a significant friendship with Mimi Tasogare, with whom he once competed in tournaments, and their connection proves vital in helping him overcome his brainwashed state. Another important rival is Kokujo; their duels, particularly when Hakuou is under the control of the Master, are a critical part of the narrative.

As a duelist, Hakuou is known for his strategic mind and his mastery of the Light Civilization. His decks typically focus on summoning powerful creatures, using many blockers to defend himself, and tapping his opponent's creatures to leave them vulnerable. Over the course of Duel Masters Charge, he varies his deck composition. At one tournament, he uses a Light and Water deck focused on summoning the powerful creature Alcadeias, Lord of Spirits. After regaining his ability to duel, he shifts to a Light and Nature deck. His signature finishing move from earlier seasons, which he continues to be associated with, involves a formation known as the Celestial Trinity, summoning the angel commands Urth, Purifying Elemental; Szubs Kin, Twilight Guardian; and Gran Gure, Space Guardian to overwhelm his opponent. This strategic depth and his ability to turn a duel around from the brink of defeat are his most notable abilities.
