Description
Osamu Kamizono is a professional shogi player of the ninth dan rank in the anime Shion no Ou. He is an adult man with black hair reaching to his shoulders and dark eyes. His outward appearance and manner are initially intimidating, and he is frequently called a demon because of his gloomy and frightening demeanor. Many of his fellow professional players, known as kishi, view him as unpredictable and are afraid of him. Beneath this harsh exterior, however, he is a good-natured man, and his intimidating reputation masks a more sympathetic character.
In his prime, Kamizono was a famously formidable player and was known by the epithet Kijin, meaning demon or man with a demonic hand. His reputation was such that Hani Makoto, a young player who had just arrived in Tokyo and would later become a major figure in the shogi world, earnestly asked to become his disciple. Kamizono was also a titleholder, having won the Kakusei title. This title was taken from him by Hani Makoto, then ranked eighth dan, on the day after Shion Yasuoka's parents were murdered, an event that ties Kamizono to the unresolved crime around which the story revolves.
By the time of the main story, Kamizono is past his peak as an active competitor. After losing his wife, he fell into an unhealthy lifestyle marked by heavy drinking and neglect of his own health, and his physical condition deteriorated as a result.
