Description
Before the events of Digimon Data Squad, Captain Rentarou Satsuma worked as a police detective. During an investigation into a series of mysterious disappearances, he discovered that the incidents were linked to the Digital World. He joined an expedition into that realm alongside Hiroshi Yushima and Spencer Damon, the father of the main protagonist, Marcus Damon. Although the expedition was forced to return to the Human World without Spencer, Satsuma later used blueprints that Spencer sent back to help develop the Data Link Digivice and establish the Japanese branch of DATS, the Digital Accident Tactics Squad. He took on the role of captain of this organization and formed a partner bond with the Digimon Kudamon, who had been sent to the Human World as a monitor.
Satsuma is defined by a stern and imposing demeanor, perfectly suited to his leadership position. He is a strict commander who expects discipline and efficiency from his subordinates, including Marcus Damon, Thomas H. Norstein, and Yoshino Fujieda. His powerful and frightening shout is infamous among the team members, acting as an effective tool to maintain order and focus. Beneath this tough exterior, however, is a fair and considerate leader with accurate situational judgment. He is typically quiet, calm, and collected, mirroring the composed nature of his own Digimon partner. Satsuma values diplomacy and prefers to resolve conflicts through negotiation, prioritizing harmony, though he is always prepared for confrontation if his efforts fail.
Throughout the series, Satsuma mainly operates from the DATS command center, delegating missions to his field agents. His motivation is rooted in his duty to protect both the Human and Digital Worlds by managing illegal Digimon activity. His role becomes more directly dangerous when the scientist Akihiro Kurata orchestrates the dissolution of DATS, leading to Satsuma's arrest. Freed with Kudamon's help, he rejoins his team. When the others resolve to enter the Digital World to face Kurata, Satsuma and Kudamon stay behind to hold off Kurata's powerful Bio-Digimon soldiers. They are seemingly lost in an explosion but later return to rescue the team at a critical moment.
Satsuma’s most significant relationship is with his partner, Kudamon, who is often seen curled around his neck like a scarf. This partnership is built on deep trust and mutual respect. Kudamon, who initially worked as an observer for the Royal Knights under the orders of the god of the Digital World, Yggdrasil, gradually develops a genuine affection for humans through his bond with Satsuma. This connection is so profound that when the Royal Knight Gallantmon attacks the Human World, an injured Kudamon evolves into his true Mega form, Sleipmon, to defend Satsuma and the others, ultimately fighting against one of his own kind.
Satsuma demonstrates significant development in his capabilities and narrative role. While he is a capable fighter from the beginning, he and Kudamon are among the strongest members of DATS before the protagonists unlock their own Burst Modes. His personal growth is embodied in Kudamon's evolution. Initially able to reach only his Champion and Ultimate forms, Reppamon and Qilinmon, Satsuma's will and the strength of their bond allow Kudamon to achieve his true power as Sleipmon, one of the prestigious Royal Knights. This evolution is a turning point, allowing him to fight on an even footing with mega-level threats. After the final conflict, five years later, Satsuma returns to law enforcement, working as a high-ranking officer within the Metropolitan Police Department.
