Description
Professor Akihiro Kurata serves as the primary antagonist for a significant portion of Digimon: Data Squad. A scientist by profession, Kurata's background is rooted in an early expedition to the Digital World. During this mission, he was attacked by a Digimon, an event that instilled in him a deep-seated terror of all Digimon. This fear quickly curdled into a virulent hatred, shaping his entire worldview and future actions. He became convinced that Digimon posed an existential threat to humanity and resolved to exterminate them.

Kurata's personality is defined by a potent mix of cowardice, sadism, and arrogant self-righteousness. Despite his genocidal ambitions, he is fundamentally a coward who fears the very creatures he seeks to destroy. He remains calm and collected when in control of a situation, but this facade masks a deeply bitter and power-hungry individual. He shows no remorse for his actions, viewing the destruction of Digimon not as murder but as pest control or a necessary step for human safety. His catchphrase, "It's showtime," belies a theatrical and self-aggrandizing nature, treating his horrific schemes as a grand performance. As his plans begin to fail, his composure shatters, revealing a petty and spiteful core, particularly in his obsessive hatred for his primary human adversary, Marcus Damon.

Kurata's primary motivation is the complete annihilation of all Digimon and the destruction of the Digital World itself, a goal he believes will secure the human world. However, his motives run deeper than simple protectionism. He is driven by a lust for power and a desire for control, eventually shifting his goal from genocide to world domination for both the real and digital realms. His hatred is also personal; he suffers from a deep-seated inferiority complex and jealousy towards Spencer Damon, the father of the protagonist, Marcus. This resentment fuels his need to prove his own superiority and vindicate his cowardly actions in the past.

In the story, Kurata initially operates from the shadows. He manipulates the government organization DATS and the public, presenting himself as a savior of humanity while secretly perpetrating a genocide against Digimon. He is directly responsible for the massacre that killed Frigimon, the foster mother of the human boy Keenan Crier, which sets Keenan on a path of vengeance. Kurata's role escalates as he creates a trio of human enforcers known as the Bio-Hybrids and, most critically, orchestrates the revival of the Demon Lord Digimon, Belphemon, intending to use it as an unstoppable weapon.

His key relationships are defined by manipulation and enmity. He is the arch-enemy of Marcus Damon, who embodies everything Kurata is not: brave, direct, and loyal. He is also a primary target for Keenan Crier's wrath, as Kurata is the architect of his tragic past. Kurata exploits the genius of Thomas H. Norstein, blackmailing the young man by threatening his sick sister's life to force his cooperation. He employs the Bio-Hybrids—Kouki, Nanami, and Ivan—as disposable tools, offering them power in exchange for their service. His ultimate relationship is with Belphemon, whom he initially seeks to control but ultimately merges with in a desperate bid to retain power.

Kurata undergoes a physical and psychological transformation throughout the series. Initially a seemingly unassuming scientist, his true genocidal nature is gradually revealed. As his plans are thwarted, his desperation grows. This culminates in his most dramatic development: when he loses the device meant to control Belphemon, he chooses to transform himself into pure data and fuse with the Demon Lord, becoming the monstrous Belphemon Rage Mode. In this fused state, his hatred and bitterness are given full physical form, and his face grotesquely emerges from the creature's chest as he loses the last vestiges of his humanity. His arc ends not with redemption, but with his final defeat and subsequent death, as he is caught in the collapse of a rift between worlds that his own actions created.

As a scientist, Kurata's most notable abilities lie in his technological genius. He created the Gizumon, a line of artificial Digimon weapons that possess the terrifying ability to permanently delete any Digimon, destroying both the creature and its Digi-Egg to prevent reincarnation. He also developed the technology that allows humans to become Bio-Hybrids, transforming into powerful Digimon themselves. In his final and most desperate act, he developed the ability to convert his own biological form into digital data, allowing him to forcibly merge with and control the Mega-level Demon Lord Belphemon, granting him immense destructive power at the cost of his own identity.
