Description
Naobi is a character from the anime.hack//Roots. He serves as the guildmaster of the guild TaN, a powerful and influential player group within the online game The World R:2. In the game, Naobi appears as a male Macabre Dancer, a class known for its combat style, and his player character belongs to the Ya Tribe Beast race, with a physical design resembling a large panther-like creature.

Naobi is introduced as a primary antagonist who actively obstructs the Twilight Brigade, the guild led by Ovan. His motivations center on obtaining Ovan’s unique character data, which he believes holds significant value. To achieve this, he orchestrates a trap using the Virus Cores that the Twilight Brigade collects, leading to Ovan’s capture. Naobi’s personality is characterized by his cunning and manipulative nature; he operates behind the scenes, using other players such as Ender to carry out his orders and harass members of the Twilight Brigade. He is willing to engage in illegal in-game activities to further his goals.

In the story, Naobi’s role as guildmaster of TaN makes him a recurring obstacle for the main characters. His key relationships include his subordinate Ender, who acts on his behalf, and his opposition to Ovan and the Twilight Brigade. Later in the narrative, after Shino threatens to expose TaN’s illegal activities, Naobi is forced to abandon his player character. This event reveals that the Naobi avatar was merely a disguise used by a System Administrator, indicating that his true identity is linked to the administration of the game world itself. As a System Administrator, he possesses extensive knowledge and control over the game’s systems, though his specific abilities as a player are tied to his Macabre Dancer class and his influence as a guild leader. Throughout the series, Naobi undergoes little personal development as a character, remaining a largely static antagonist whose schemes ultimately fail with the dissolution of his guild and the exposure of his true nature.
