Description
Eon de Beaumont is a young French nobleman serving as a knight in the court of King Louis XV. He is also an agent of Le Secret du Roi, the king's private intelligence service, tasked with missions that operate outside official channels. At the beginning of the story, Eon is driven by a singular, tragic event: the mysterious death of his older sister, Lia de Beaumont, who was also a knight and spy for the crown. Her body was found floating along the Seine in a coffin marked with the word "Psalms," and she was later discovered to have been filled with mercury, a substance tied to occult rituals. This loss profoundly shapes Eon, transforming him from a loyal servant of the crown into a determined investigator seeking to uncover the truth behind her murder and the dark conspiracy that surrounds it.

In personality, Eon is portrayed as serious, principled, and intensely dedicated. He carries a heavy sense of duty, both to his king and, more personally, to his sister. While he begins as a relatively conventional and upright individual, the harrowing events he witnesses force him to confront complex moral ambiguities, fundamentally reshaping his worldview. He is not callous; rather, he is a sensitive individual whose resolve hardens in the face of injustice, showing a willingness to sacrifice his own well-being for the sake of his mission. His initial shock and grief give way to a steely determination, and he proves capable of moving through the dangerous and corrupt underbellies of French, Russian, and English society as an effective spy.

The core of Eon's role in the narrative is as the primary protagonist, whose personal quest for vengeance quickly becomes entangled with a much larger and more dangerous plot. This conspiracy involves the "Royal Psalms," ancient poems that, when recited by a "Poet," can unleash powerful supernatural forces capable of healing, killing, or altering reality. Eon inherits the mission to recover these Psalms from his sister, setting him on a journey across 18th-century Europe. His path is defined by a unique and unusual condition: he shares his body with the spirit of his deceased sister, Lia. Her vengeful ghost, consumed by rage and a thirst for retribution, possesses him, particularly during moments of intense combat or emotional distress. When this happens, Eon physically transforms, his features softening and his hair coming loose to resemble his sister's appearance. In this state, his fighting prowess is enhanced, and he speaks with Lia's voice, acting as her instrument for revenge.

Eon's key relationships are central to his development. The most significant is the symbiotic yet troubled bond with his sister, Lia. While her possession grants him great power, it also threatens to erode his own identity. As the series progresses, the boundary between Eon and Lia blurs, and the physical transformation becomes less distinct, signifying a gradual merging of their two souls. He is not alone in his quest; he is supported by a small band of allies appointed by the Queen, including a young boy named Robin, a gentleman named Durand who was a colleague of Lia, and his old sword master, Teillagory. These companions represent the ideals of loyalty and camaraderie, grounding Eon as he delves deeper into a world of royal conspiracies and monsters.

Throughout the story, Eon undergoes significant development. He evolves from a grieving brother and a loyal, patriotic soldier into a more independent thinker who is willing to question the very authorities he once served. The creator of the series noted that Eon embodies the "contradictions" of pre-Revolutionary France, such as wealth and poverty, faith and heresy, and his journey is about living with those contradictions without being destroyed by them. Initially reliant on Lia's spirit for supernatural power, Eon gradually learns to master the Psalms himself, taking control of his own destiny rather than being a passive host for his sister's revenge. This internal struggle for autonomy makes his character arc one of self-discovery as much as it is a mission of vengeance.

Eon possesses several notable abilities that define him as a hero. Primarily, he is a highly skilled and expert swordsman, trained as a cavalry officer and capable of holding his own against formidable opponents. This martial skill is dramatically amplified when Lia's spirit takes over, granting him superhuman agility and lethality in combat. Beyond his physical talents, Eon is a capable spy, displaying charisma and intelligence that allow him to navigate complex political courts and gather crucial information. As the series progresses, he learns to wield the supernatural power of the Royal Psalms, a unique ability that is central to the plot and sets him apart from ordinary knights. This combination of traditional swashbuckling prowess and dark fantasy elements makes him a unique figure within his world.
