Description
Centuries-old Shoyo Yoshida, known as Utsuro, originated as an unnamed human whose ability to absorb vast quantities of Altana granted him ageless immortality and rapid regeneration. This power led to persecution, causing such suffering that he fractured into multiple personalities over time. Among them, Yoshida Shoyo emerged as a distinct entity embodying compassion and a quest for redemption. Shoyo suppressed Utsuro's violent personas and abandoned the assassin group Tenshouin Naraku, which Utsuro had commanded for centuries.

As Shoyo, he saved a dying slave child, Oboro, by sharing his blood, imparting quasi-immortality and regeneration. Wearied by killing, Shoyo aspired to open a school. He founded Shoka Sonjuku, a private academy accepting children of any social status. Notable students included Sakata Gintoki—discovered scavenging battlefields—alongside Takasugi Shinsuke, Katsura Kotaro, and later Imai Nobume. Shoyo taught students to find their own ideals and protect others, displaying kindness by admitting penniless students free of charge and supplying books personally. He possessed a distinctive habit: admonishing impulsive students with a light head tap that knocked them into the ground.

Shoyo's peace shattered when Oboro, now part of Naraku and envious of the new students, betrayed his location. Arrested by Naraku and imprisoned, Shoyo became a catalyst for the Joui War after his students, mistaking his arrest for political persecution, joined the conflict hoping to rescue him—unintentionally prolonging the war. While awaiting execution, Shoyo taught his jailer, Mukuro. The Tendoshuu then forced a cruel choice upon Gintoki: execute Shoyo or witness Takasugi and Katsura's deaths. At this moment, Utsuro's original personality reasserted dominance, eradicating all other personas including Shoyo. Gintoki beheaded Shoyo to save his friends, honoring a promise to protect them. Shoyo's body regenerated afterward, now fully controlled by Utsuro.

Dominant Utsuro allied with the Tendoshuu, seeking an end to his immortality. Consumed by emptiness and hatred for humanity, he plotted universal destruction to terminate his suffering. He manipulated groups like the Harusame pirates and Liberation Army, aiming to concentrate destructive energy to annihilate Earth and himself. Utsuro wielded immense combat prowess: mastery of swordsmanship matching Shoyo's style, expertise in Hakkei martial arts, physical abilities surpassing elite fighters, and centuries-honed strategic cunning. His blood could grant others regeneration and near-immortality, though recipients suffered physical deterioration. His sole weakness was exposure to foreign planetary Altana, which inhibited his regeneration.

Centuries later, defeated Utsuro reincarnated as a child. Gintoki protected this child, who rapidly aged and manifested Shoyo's memories. To prevent Utsuro's resurrection, the child removed his own heart, entrusting it to Gintoki. The Seibouist cult later recovered the comatose body, connecting it to an Altana-powered machine to revive Utsuro. Shoyo initially reappeared, expressing sorrow for his students' suffering. Utsuro soon manifested through Takasugi's blood-controlled body. In a final battle, Takasugi—aided by Oboro's lingering will—stabbed himself instead of Shoyo. Utsuro, rendered mortal within Takasugi's failing body, was defeated by Gintoki. Reunited with Gintoki, Kagura, and Shinpachi, Shoyo sacrificed himself by dispersing his Altana to neutralize the terminal's catastrophic energy overload, ending the cycle.

Shoyo's legacy endured through his students. Gintoki forged his Yorozuya embodying Shoyo's teachings on protection. Katsura carried Shoyo's textbook—which once saved his life—and pursued peaceful change. Takasugi, deeply scarred by Shoyo's death, initially sought the world's ruin but ultimately aided in stopping Utsuro. Shoyo's influence surfaced during Utsuro's final moments, his presence momentarily restraining Utsuro to enable Gintoki's strike. Physically, Shoyo resembled Katsura with long brown-grey hair and green eyes, typically wearing grey robes. Utsuro shared this appearance but exhibited red, empty eyes and often a cold, weary smile.
