Description
Fumiko Komori is a character from the anime Kamisama Kazoku, where she serves as a primary antagonist and the mother of the character Kumiko. Her outward appearance is that of a female devil, a form that was not originally her own. The series eventually reveals that Fumiko was once an angel who fell in love with a mortal man. Their relationship resulted in the birth of her daughter, Kumiko. However, upon seeing his child's angelic heritage, the mortal man abandoned both Fumiko and their newborn daughter. This profound betrayal and heartbreak consumed Fumiko, causing her nature to turn from angelic to evil.
In her role as a devil, Fumiko is defined by her cruelty and utter lack of compassion, even toward her own child. She manipulates Kumiko throughout the story by deceiving her into believing that her youth and power are draining away. To sustain herself and halt this fabricated decay, Fumiko convinces her daughter that she needs to harvest the energy of human souls. This manipulation is a calculated effort to corrupt Kumiko’s heart and turn her into a true devil as well. Her motivations are rooted in her own pain and a deep-seated desire for power, showing no genuine maternal care and instead viewing her daughter as a tool for her own schemes. She initially sends Kumiko to capture the protagonist, Samatarou, specifically so that she might consume his vast spiritual energy for herself.
Within the story's narrative, Fumiko is the central threat that drives the conflict in the latter part of the series. Her power proves to be formidable, and she successfully overcomes several members of the Kamiyama family, including Samatarou's divine relatives. Her presence forces Samatarou to confront a significant internal struggle, as he must find a way to defeat her without giving in to his own wrath, which would transform him into a demon himself. The climax of the series heavily features Fumiko's defeat. She is ultimately overcome when Samatarou manages to destroy the demonic aspect within himself, an act that breaks her power and resolves the immediate crisis. Fumiko's key relationships are almost entirely adversarial. Her connection with her daughter, Kumiko, is defined by deception and exploitation, while her actions set her directly against Samatarou and his family, acting as the primary obstacle they must overcome. Fumiko’s development is largely a tragic backstory that explains her turn to evil, but within the main timeline, she remains a static villain whose defeat paves the way for the redemption and transformation of her daughter, who turns back into an angel. As a devil, her notable abilities include significant combat prowess, as she is shown to possess enough power to defeat goddesses, and a hunger for spiritual energy that drives her actions.
