TV-Series
Description
Meme Kamiyama is the youngest child of Osamu and Venus Kamiyama, making her the younger sister to Misa and Samatarou. As a member of this divine family living on Earth to learn about humanity, she is a candidate for goddess status. Despite her young age, she already possesses and can control some of her supernatural powers.
In terms of personality, Meme is most notable for appearing almost completely emotionless, with a perpetually calm and serious expression. She often comes across as being quite mature and level-headed for her age, and in many situations, she seems to be one of the more sensible members of the Kamiyama household. However, at her core, she is still a child. Her lack of worldly experience means she can sometimes be easily influenced or swept up into the wild and often inappropriate antics of her older relatives, not because she shares their intentions but simply because she has no reason to believe their behavior is unreasonable. This juxtaposition of a deadpan exterior with a childlike innocence is a central aspect of her character.
Meme’s motivations are not driven by personal ambition but rather by her position within her family. She joins in the various schemes and adventures of her brother Samatarou and her sisters, often at the behest of her mother, Venus, or her older sister, Misa. Her role in the story is primarily that of a supporting character, providing quiet, often deadpan commentary on the chaotic events unfolding around her while also being a willing participant in the family's divine mischief. Her actions, though sometimes mischievous, are portrayed as innocent rather than malicious.
Her most significant relationships are with her immediate family members living under the same roof. She is particularly impressionable when it comes to her mother, Venus, and her sister, Misa, both of whom are more overtly playful and provocative. Meme often joins them in their teasing of Samatarou or in their exaggerated displays, following their lead without fully grasping the embarrassing or ecchi-tinged nature of their actions. In contrast to her flamboyant mother and sister, Meme's quiet demeanor creates a unique dynamic within the household.
While Meme does not undergo a dramatic character arc like the protagonist, her childish nature is highlighted during a brief stint when she experiences life as a human. During this time, her typical emotionless expression gives way to a much more outwardly cheerful and scatterbrained personality. This version of Meme was described as being less composed, to the point of putting her shoes on the wrong feet without noticing anything was wrong, revealing that her usual stoicism is at least partly a trait of her divine existence.
In terms of abilities, Meme is quite skilled at controlling people's emotions, a power she shares with her older sister, Misa. As a candidate for goddesshood, she can manipulate the feelings of others through her divine power, although she wields this ability with the innocent and unassuming nature of a child. In the sequel light novel series, Kamisama Kazoku Z, Meme formally becomes a goddess, though no significant visible changes are noted as a result of her ascension to this new status.
