Description
Barasuisho is an original character created for the anime adaptation of Rozen Maiden, appearing specifically in the second season, Rozen Maiden: Träumend, and the prequel OVA, Rozen Maiden: Ouvertüre. She is not a character from the original manga. Barasuisho presents herself as the seventh doll of the Rozen Maidens, but this is a deception. In truth, she is a false doll, a creation of Enju, who is a bitter and jealous apprentice of the legendary doll maker Rozen. Driven by an inferiority complex and the desire to surpass his master, Enju crafted Barasuisho to serve as his ultimate masterpiece, intended to defeat Rozen's genuine dolls and prove his own skill. Her very existence is a counterfeit, built to mimic the appearance of the true seventh Rozen Maiden, Kirakisho, based on Enju's memory of the design.
In terms of appearance, Barasuisho has long, curly light purple or silvery-white hair and sharp yellow eyes that give her a cold impression. She wears an ornate, layered dress in varying shades of lavender and purple, which is reminiscent of a flower bud. Her most distinctive feature is a rose-patterned eyepatch covering her left eye, though it is later revealed that her eye is perfectly normal and unharmed beneath it.
Barasuisho’s personality is defined by an unnerving calm and an apparent lack of emotion. She is taciturn, often speaking in short, clipped sentences, and has a peculiar habit of parroting or repeating the words of other dolls, such as Shinku, in a manner that is both taunting and disarming. She displays no favoritism or empathy towards the other dolls, treating them solely as obstacles to be removed. However, this icy exterior is a facade that hides a deeper instability. When her eyepatch is removed, she reveals a more fragile and emotional side, even shedding tears, which suggests that the eyepatch may act as a seal on her true feelings, allowing her to carry out the violent tasks required of her. Despite her coldness towards her sisters, she possesses a deep, almost desperate loyalty and affection for her creator, Enju, whom she refers to as Father. Her motivations are intrinsically linked to him; she is driven to win the Alice Game, to collect all the Rosa Mystica, and to become the ultimate doll solely to fulfill Enju’s ambition and bring him satisfaction.
In the story, Barasuisho serves as the primary antagonist, acting as the catalyst that forces the dormant Alice Game to resume in earnest. She actively manipulates other dolls, such as Suiginto and Souseiseki, by preying on their desires and loyalties to reignite the conflict. To lure Shinku into a trap, she even uses Suiginto's artificial spirit, Meimei, as she possesses no spirit of her own. Throughout the series, she demonstrates overwhelming power, single-handedly defeating and retiring several Rozen Maidens, including Suiseiseki, Kanaria, and ultimately, Shinku, collecting their Rosa Mysticae. Her most significant relationship is with her creator, Enju, who initially appears to the other dolls as Rozen himself. Her devotion to him is absolute, and his validation is her only true reward. After she defeats Shinku and gathers all seven Rosa Mysticae, believing she has made Enju proud, her body begins to crumble, unable to contain the immense power she has absorbed. In her final moments, she ignores Enju's desperate pleas to release the Rosa Mysticae, instead continuing to call out to him as she shatters into pieces in his hands.
Barasuisho's development is subtle but tragic. She begins as an emotionless, unstoppable force of nature, a perfect instrument of Enju's will. As she nears her goal and the battle concludes, small cracks appear in her demeanor, culminating in the revelation of her true emotional vulnerability beneath the eyepatch. Her end is not one of villainous triumph but of pathetic destruction, a hollow victory that highlights the futility of her master's quest. Her notable abilities revolve around the generation and manipulation of purple crystals. She can create these crystals in various forms, launching them as sharp projectiles, forming them into spikes from the ground, or shaping them into a sword for close combat. She also demonstrates powerful telekinetic-like abilities, such as shattering glass and imprisoning other dolls within solid crystal formations. Despite her immense power, her body, being an imitation and not a true Rozen Maiden, is inherently flawed and ultimately cannot withstand the energy of a complete set of Rosa Mysticae.
