Description
Nerine is a central character in the anime Shuffle! Memories. She is the only daughter of Forbesii, the King of the Devils, and his wife Sage, making her a demon princess. As a child, she met Rin Tsuchimi during his visit to the demon world, and the memories of that encounter later draw her to the human world. Along with her cousin Lisianthus, she transfers to Verbena Academy and is placed in Rin’s homeroom. Her arrival is part of a political arrangement in which both the god and demon kings present their daughters as potential marriage candidates for Rin.

In terms of personality, Nerine is calm, reserved, and consistently speaks in a polite and formal manner. She often appears composed and gentle, contrasting with more boisterous characters like Lisianthus. However, she possesses a strong sense of conviction and can become fiercely protective of Rin. When someone insults or threatens him, she does not hesitate to unleash her formidable magical power, once destroying an entire school gymnasium in a fit of anger. Despite her quiet exterior, she is emotionally sensitive and carries a deep sense of guilt rooted in her past. As a child, she suffered from an incurable illness, and a clone named Lycoris sacrificed her own life to save Nerine. This event caused Nerine to absorb Lycoris’s spirit, emotions, and singing voice, known as the Angel’s Bell. Because she believes she has stolen everything from Lycoris, Nerine initially hates singing and struggles with feelings of unworthiness.

Nerine’s primary motivation is to forge a genuine connection with Rin based on her own feelings, separate from the memories she inherited from Lycoris. Over the course of the story, she moves from despair to acceptance, learning to live as herself rather than as a vessel for Lycoris’s legacy. Rin plays a crucial role in this development, challenging her to continue living and reassuring her that Lycoris wanted her to sing and smile as her own person.

Her role in the narrative is that of a primary love interest and one of the key figures in the romantic tension surrounding Rin. She also serves as a representative of the demon realm, highlighting the cultural and political dynamics between the three worlds. Her reserved nature often places her in contrast to the more outgoing Lisianthus, but the two share a genuine friendship and familial bond despite being romantic rivals.

Key relationships include her father Forbesii, whom she respects but occasionally scolds for his foolish behavior, often addressing him as Devil King instead of Father. Her mother Sage is a close confidant who supports her emotionally. The most significant relationship outside of Rin is with Lycoris, the clone whose sacrifice defines Nerine’s inner conflict and growth. Nerine also has a warm but competitive friendship with Lisianthus, her cousin and fellow candidate for Rin’s affection.

Nerine is exceptionally skilled in magic, with destructive power capable of leveling entire blocks. She is also a top student academically. However, her domestic abilities are limited; she can only cook omelets well and struggles with other household tasks, though she excels at sewing. Her singing voice, the Angel’s Bell, is both a gift and a source of anguish, representing the sorrow of Lycoris’s death and the hope for healing. Throughout her arc, she learns to reclaim that voice as her own.
