Description
Ama Shigure is the mother of Asa Shigure and a supporting character in Shuffle! Memories. Her background is deeply tied to the supernatural politics of her world, as she originally hails from the demon realm. At a low point in her life, she fell into a deep depression and volunteered as the first test subject for a joint project between gods and demons known as Project Yggdrasil, which aimed to create a superior magical being. The experiments were successful but placed an immense strain on her, causing her to temporarily lose control of her enhanced powers. This outburst resulted in a massive explosion that destroyed the laboratory and simultaneously teleported her to the human world, specifically to Japan. Presumed dead by the gods and demons, she was found and nursed back to health by an unnamed Japanese man. She eventually fell in love with her caretaker, and the two married, later giving birth to their daughter, Asa. Her husband would eventually die making an unexplained sacrifice to protect his wife and child.

In terms of physical appearance, Ama has a youthful and childish demeanor that often leads to her being mistaken for her daughter's younger sister, much to Asa's chagrin. She has strawberry blonde hair and violet eyes, the latter of which is a trait she passed down to Asa and a marker of the Project Yggdrasil experiments. She stands at 158 centimeters tall. One of her most consistent visual traits is the cat-ear hat she wears; this is not merely a fashion choice but a practical accessory used to hide her demon ears from casual sight. This habit stems from a time when the human, demon, and god realms were not yet unified.

Ama possesses a lively and playful personality, often speaking in a sloppy or casual tone that contributes to her youthful image. She has a habit of drastically shortening names to create cute nicknames, such as calling her daughter A-chan. Despite her childish exterior, her qualities as a mother are first-rate, and she cares for Asa deeply. Their relationship is observed to be more like that of close friends or sisters than a traditional mother-daughter dynamic. She is also a talented cook, though not quite as proficient as her daughter.

Within the story, Ama serves as a source of crucial information regarding Asa's origins. She is the one who reveals to Rin Tsuchimi the truth about Asa being half-demon and the circumstances of her own past. She often teases both her daughter and Rin about their relationship, enjoying their reactions. Beyond her role as a mother, she is a living relic of the failed Yggdrasil project, and in the final episode, both the King of Gods and the King of Devils catch a glimpse of her, with the former remarking that she looks like someone he once knew and expressing a wish to apologize to her.

Ama's development is largely explored through her backstory, which explains her transition from a suicidal demon test subject to a content human housewife and mother. Her key relationships define her present life. Her bond with Asa is central; she not only dotes on her but also helps care for her when her inherited magical powers make her sick and cuts her hair when it grows long. Her relationship with her late husband was one of gratitude that blossomed into love, as he saved her life when she had nothing. She also becomes a trusted friend to Rin, entrusting him with the family secret.

Regarding notable abilities, Ama has enhanced magical powers as a result of the Project Yggdrasil experiments. Although she is rarely seen using magic directly, this immense power was inadvertently passed down to her daughter Asa. Because Asa inherited a human body from her father, her constitution is weak and she struggles to contain the magical energy she received from her mother. Ama's own demonic heritage is further evidenced by her long ears, which she keeps hidden.
