Description
J.J. Robinson is the benefactor and leader of the G-Crew, having watched over life in the galaxy for many years. He is a member of a council and serves as the supervisor of Earth. His role is to select individuals with the right characteristics to become Gatchaman by extracting their spiritual essence to create their NOTES. He uses these NOTES to distribute cryptic prophecies, warning the G-Crew of future events that cannot be solved by Earth's scientific capabilities.
In his physical appearance, J.J. Robinson is notably tall, described as the tallest character in the show, with some sources listing his height as approximately 280 centimeters. He has dark brown, wrinkled skin, grey hair, and typically wears a blue men's kimono with a red and black striped scarf, and a golden hair pick. His personality is that of a calm, almost monk-like figure who remains somewhat mysterious. He shares some interests with the Gatchaman member Hajime Ichinose, such as an appreciation for origami.
J.J. Robinson's primary responsibility is providing guidance through his prophecies, which are always accurate. However, he adopts a non-interventionist approach, generally refraining from directly solving problems or interfering with events. This has led some characters, such as the former Gatchaman turned antagonist Berg Katse, to view the Gatchaman as birds trapped in a cage by J.J.. He works from within the G-Crew's base, distributing his predictions and observing the team's progress, often using origami to display events happening in the outside world. He is sometimes described as a transcendent, god-like figure. The narrative explores the theme of whether it is right for even powerful beings to unconditionally depend on such a figure, as the Gatchaman begin to act more according to their own wills rather than strictly following J.J.'s prophecies.
Regarding key relationships, J.J. selects and creates the NOTES for the Gatchaman members. He is seen observing O.D. before his fight with Berg Katse and later looks upon Katse after his plan has been foiled. In Gatchaman Crowds insight, he selects a new member, Tsubasa Tachibana (designated G-60), transforming her into a Gatchaman and indirectly guiding her development as she learns to think and act for herself. Among his notable abilities are his perfect foresight, which he delivers in a prophetic manner, the ability to extract a person's spiritual essence to forge a NOTE, the power to use origami to observe distant events, and the demonstrated ability to float in mid-air.
