Description
Paiman is a small alien creature who serves as a member of the Gatchaman team and regards himself as its leader. Standing roughly 33 centimeters tall, he has a compact, rounded appearance with large eyes, and he strongly dislikes being compared to a panda. He was dispatched to Earth by J.J., the founder of the Gatchaman, and is the longest-serving member of the group, with a history that spans several hundred years. Because J.J. places complete trust in him, Paiman is positioned as the team leader and is expected to prioritize carrying out J.J.'s predictions about the future.

In terms of personality, Paiman is a strict and authoritative figure with a short temper. He follows orders without questioning them and expects the same discipline from his teammates. He frequently clashes with Hajime Ichinose, whom he addresses as Newbie, and their interactions are marked by friction because Hajime refuses to behave like a conventional subordinate. Despite his gruff manner, he takes his responsibilities seriously and acts as the operational commander and information navigator for the team, relaying instructions and explaining situations during missions.

His primary motivation is loyalty to J.J. and the mission of protecting Earth, which he interprets through the orders and foresight given to him. He is driven by duty rather than personal ambition, though his sense of self-importance sometimes leads him into trouble. In the events of Gatchaman Crowds insight, Paiman opens a daycare center in Tachikawa and later decides to run for prime minister after witnessing the alien Gelsadra's political campaign. His campaign gets him into difficulty when he is accused of bribing voters with stuffed pandas, and he ultimately loses the election to Gelsadra.

In terms of key relationships, Paiman is closest to J.J., whose authority he never questions. His dynamic with Hajime is the most prominent source of conflict, as he finds her unpredictable and difficult to command, even though she ultimately supports him. He also works alongside the other members of the Gatchaman team, including Sugane, Joe, O.D., Utsutsu, and the newer recruits. During insight, Hajime helps him care for the children at his daycare and assists with his political campaign, showing that their relationship, while contentious, is ultimately cooperative.

Paiman's development across the story sees him move from a rigid, mission-focused commander to someone who engages more directly with ordinary human society. His attempts to run a daycare and enter politics place him in situations where he must adapt to civilian life and public opinion, with mixed results. Throughout this, he remains dedicated to the Gatchaman's mission and to the guidance of J.J., even as his methods are tested.

His most notable ability is his Gatchaman form, in which he transforms into a large yellow-and-black mecha-like armor with wheels attached to its arms and a mouth-like opening. This form can change into a high-speed vehicle capable of transporting other members of the G-Crew inside it. In his normal state, he serves a support role, using his long experience and role as leader to coordinate the team's actions and keep the group connected during missions.
