Description
Junichiro Kagami is a 24-year-old former prodigy who serves as the unconventional protagonist of his story. His early life was marked by extraordinary academic achievement; while still a teenager, he published a groundbreaking paper in a renowned scientific journal proposing a theoretical framework for teleportation inspired by a famous fictional door. Although his theory was met with ridicule from the academic establishment, it has never been disproven, and he was subsequently scouted by prestigious research institutions around the world. Despite this potential for a conventional career, Kagami declined all offers. He claims to suffer from a condition he calls YD, an affliction that he says prevents him from doing anything other than what he genuinely yearns to do.
Following this period of academic brilliance, Kagami withdrew from the world to become a self-described NEET, dedicating his days to his true passion: his otaku hobbies. He spends most of his time at home working to improve his anime blog, watching anime, collecting memorabilia, and engaging in debates about fictional characters, with a particular fondness for magical girl shows. His comfortable, reclusive life is interrupted by his younger sister, Suzune, who forces him to accept a teaching position at their alma mater, a high school in need of a physics instructor.
In terms of personality, Kagami is carefree, cheerful, and remarkably unashamed of his otaku identity. He has a habit of giving unique nicknames to people he meets and often behaves in ways that others find embarrassing or childish. However, beneath this eccentric exterior lies a passionate and caring individual. When agitated or confronted with serious injustice, his usual playful demeanor gives way to a calm, serious, and intimidating expression. He takes personal offense when others disparage anime or otaku culture, becoming hot-blooded in its defense.
Kagamis primary motivation is to create a life where he can pursue his hobbies without interference. He initially has no desire to become a teacher, but his sisters forceful intervention, combined with the influence of a school administrator named Koyomi Hiiragi, convinces him to take the job. His teaching role becomes a framework within which he can continue his own pursuits. His unusual methods often involve integrating his otaku interests into his lessons, using competitive video games and other forms of entertainment to engage and reform his students. While his methods seem bizarre or pointless at first, they consistently come from a place of genuine care and prove effective in changing the lives of his students for the better.
Kagami`s role in the story is that of a trickster mentor who challenges the status quo of the educational system. He splits his time between his hobbies and his work, using his position to help "stray students" who are struggling. His approach to teaching places him in opposition to more rigid and authoritarian figures. He eventually comes into direct conflict with Arisu Hiiragi, the young principal of the main campus of Hiiragi Academy, whose strict methods he despises. Kagami boldly challenges Arisu for her position as principal, aiming to dismantle what he sees as an oppressive "educational prison".
Key relationships include that with his sister, Suzune, who serves as the catalyst for his entry into the teaching profession. He also has a relationship with Koyomi Hiiragi, who recruits him to work at her private school after seeing his unorthodox potential. His students form the core of his daily interactions, and though he remains largely oblivious to their affections, he builds a dedicated following among them.
Across the story, Kagami undergoes significant development. He begins as an unlikable figure whose childlike antics seem unacceptable in the real world, but he gradually grows into a more self-aware individual. Although he never abandons his otaku nature, he becomes more invested in his role as an educator, enriching his students` lives and learning important lessons about himself in the process.
Junichiro Kagami possesses several notable abilities that make him effective. Foremost is his status as a genius, specifically in the fields of physics and technology. He is an exceptional programmer and hacker, capable of creating sophisticated programs and firewalls with ease. His intellect is such that he is highly sought after by leading scientific organizations like CERM. Perhaps his greatest ability is his unconventional yet potent teaching method; he acts as a guile hero who can manipulate situations and people for their own good, delivering lessons in a roundabout way that ultimately leads to positive outcomes.
