Description
Garaku Gazert is the Chief Court Pharmacist for the royal family of the kingdom of Clarines, holding a high-ranking and trusted position within Wistal Castle. She is a woman estimated to be in her mid-twenties to early thirties, with a distinctive appearance marked by blonde hair typically styled in a half ponytail bun and deep purple eyes. She is almost always seen wearing a white lab coat, a symbol of her office, and accessorizes with long, pale red earrings that feature a darker red stripe near the bottom.

Her personality is a blend of laid-back eccentricity and sharp professionalism. Garaku often displays a humorous and unpredictable side, as seen in her unorthodox method of choosing locations for gathering medicinal herbs by casually throwing darts at a map. This carefree demeanor can quickly shift, however, as she is also demanding and expects diligence and competence from those under her supervision. Despite her quirks, she is extremely talented and deeply respected for her vast knowledge and leadership in the field of pharmacology. She genuinely cares for the well-being of her subordinates, particularly the young pharmacists Shirayuki and Ryuu, and is protective of them while also pushing them to grow.

In her role as the chief pharmacist, Garaku oversees the research and projects conducted in the royal pharmacy, assigning missions to her staff and ensuring the medical needs of the palace are met. Her expertise is renowned, with her reputation extending even to distant scholarly regions like Lyrias, where her visits are highly anticipated. A significant part of her function in the story is as a mentor and supervisor. She personally administered the entrance examination that allowed Shirayuki to become a court apprentice, and she was immediately impressed by the girl's resourcefulness and quick thinking. Although Shirayuki is technically a student under Ryuu, Garaku takes a direct interest in her development and does not hesitate to scold her for reckless actions, such as during the Olin Maris incident, demonstrating a tough love approach.

Garaku’s key relationships are central to her character. She is the primary teacher and guardian of Ryuu, having recognized his exceptional talent from a very young age. She looks after not just his professional education but also his health, emotional growth, and social life, supporting Prince Izana’s decision to send him to Lilias so he could gain broader experience. She shares a long and complicated history with Shidan, an old colleague and friend. Their dynamic is filled with bickering and professional rivalry, yet it is underpinned by mutual respect. In their youth, Garaku invited Shidan to join her at the palace, but he refused, stating he would never surpass her if he followed in her footsteps. Rumors about their relationship have persisted, with flashbacks revealing an unacted-upon moment of potential romance when Shidan once refrained from kissing her as she slept. Outside of these professional ties, Garaku also forms a casual friendship with Zen’s bodyguard, Obi. The two become drinking companions, bonding over their shared high tolerance for alcohol during the time Obi spends at the pharmacy protecting Shirayuki.

Little is explicitly detailed about Garaku’s personal background or development over time, as she does not often speak of her past. However, she is known to enjoy discussing the history of Clarines, indicating a deep familiarity with and likely a long-standing service to the kingdom. Her primary narrative development is seen through her successful guidance of her apprentices, trusting in their abilities and creating opportunities for their futures even if it means letting them work at other locations. As a pharmacist, her notable abilities include a profound mastery of herbal medicine and pharmacology, allowing her to efficiently manage the health of the royal family and run the castle’s pharmacy with authority. Her unconventional problem-solving skills and high tolerance for alcohol are also frequently noted traits.
