TV-Series
Description
Izana Wistalia Clarines is the first-born prince of the kingdom of Clarines and the elder brother of the second prince, Zen Wistalia. He eventually ascends to become king following the abdication of his mother, Queen Haruto, inheriting the throne from his father, the late King Kain. He is approximately 25 to 27 years old during the main events of the story.
Izana is characterized by a sharp intellect, a strong sense of responsibility, and a demeanor that is often described as intimidating and cold. He is a pragmatic and shrewd ruler who consistently places the well-being and stability of his kingdom above all personal considerations. This leads him to be calculating and, at times, manipulative in his political dealings, as he believes that difficult decisions and strategic tests are necessary for the health of Clarines. However, beneath this serious exterior, he possesses a playful side, which he most frequently expresses by teasing his younger brother about his romantic feelings for Shirayuki, much to Zen's frustration.
Izana's primary motivation is to be an effective and just ruler for his people. He has no patience for corrupt nobles or those who exploit their subjects, as demonstrated by his actions on his seventeenth birthday when he orchestrated the downfall of the corrupt lords of Lido and Sui. His actions are consistently driven by a desire to test and strengthen those around him, ensuring that only the capable and loyal serve the crown. He holds a wary view of Shirayuki's closeness with his brother initially, not necessarily disapproving of her personally but rather testing the resolve and maturity of their relationship given their differing social stations.
In the story, Izana serves as a significant authority figure and a catalyst for growth, particularly for Zen and Shirayuki. His return to the castle often creates political tension and personal challenges for the protagonists. He deliberately withholds information about his movements to test his brother's awareness. During the outbreak of a disease in the northern city of Lyrias, he takes command of the situation, ordering the city's gates to be barricaded to contain the contagion, demonstrating his decisive leadership. He also uses an alias, Rouen or Lowen, to travel incognito as a pharmacist, allowing him to observe situations firsthand, which is how he comes to witness Shirayuki's dedication and skill, leading to his gradual respect for her.
Izana's most significant relationship is with his brother, Zen. Their dynamic is complex, marked by distance and testing on Izana's part, but it is rooted in a deep-seated care for Zen's development as a leader. Izana assigns the trusted aide Mitsuhide to Zen, serving as both companion and a means of indirect oversight. His relationship with Shirayuki evolves from one of wary observation and initial disapproval to a quiet respect after he witnesses her strength and determination during the crisis in Lyrias. He eventually gives his tacit acceptance of her place at Zen's side. He is betrothed to Haki Arleon, a relationship that is marked by mutual respect and quiet affection, though he typically subordinates personal matters to his duties as king. He also shares a connection with Mitsuhide Rouen, whose name he borrows for his alias, and he has been instrumental in the younger man's career.
Throughout the series, Izana undergoes a subtle but notable development. He begins as a distant and seemingly cold heir apparent, focused on testing his brother's relationship. Over time, his interactions with Shirayuki and his observations of Zen's growth lead him to become a more openly supportive, if still reserved, figure. He moves from simply issuing tests to acknowledging the strength of those around him, culminating in actions like sending Shirayuki and Ryuu to study in Lyrias for two years to further their development as part of his broader plan for the kingdom.
Izana possesses notable abilities beyond his political acumen. He is highly skilled in swordsmanship and demonstrates considerable physical prowess and stealth. He is exceptionally nimble and observant, able to eavesdrop on conversations without detection and vanish from sight in an instant. In one instance, he was able to throw a sharp stone with enough precision to cut Obi, a trained assassin, on the face from a distance, showcasing his combat skill and stealth.
