Description
Ra-Kan is a major protagonist in the anime Zoids Genesis. He is an older man who was once the ruler of the northern kingdom of Kira, a large and prosperous nation known for its agriculture and textile industries, and one of the first states to be invaded by the expansionist Digald forces. When Digald surrounded his castle, Ra-Kan chose to surrender rather than risk heavy loss of life among his people, and he subsequently abandoned his position and traveled the land as a wanderer with his niece Re Mii. He later came to regret this decision deeply, believing that his bloodless surrender emboldened Digald and allowed its tyranny to spread across the continent.
In his travels, Ra-Kan is patient and kind toward those he encounters. When the village of Miroodo is attacked by Digald's Bio Zoids and its vital generator is damaged during the fighting, he agrees to help the young Ruuji Familon find a mechanic capable of repairing it. During their journey together, Ruuji persuades Ra-Kan to stop fleeing from his past and take a stand against Digald. This leads Ra-Kan to make the life decision to restart the war by creating, amassing, and organizing the Digald Suppression Army. Meanwhile, the survivors of Kira rebuild their community in a new hidden location under the name Zuuri, which prospers peacefully and later serves as a base for the resistance.
As a leader, Ra-Kan is respected by his followers and former retainers, and he works to unite scattered resistance forces across the continent, even sending envoys to old allies such as the general Tize to recruit them into his army. He is also a capable Zoid pilot, riding the wolf-type Sword Wolf, and shows strong tactical and strategic abilities in planning the resistance's operations. He takes particular notice of Ruuji's courage and talent, mentoring the young man and gradually treating him as his successor.
Late in the story, during a confrontation with the enemy commander Georg, Ra-Kan is caught in the blast of the gravity particle cannon fired by the Digald leader Jiin and is presumed dead. He survives, shielded by the defenses of Georg's BioTricera, and returns in time for the final battle, where his arrival helps open the path to victory against Jiin and the Digald forces. His overall development follows his journey from a guilt-ridden former ruler who chose surrender to protect his people, into a determined commander who reclaims his sense of purpose and fights to end the war that his earlier decision had allowed to spread.
