Description
Major General Zairin, also known as Zairin de Zaltz, serves as one of the primary antagonists for much of Zoids Genesis, acting as a direct rival to the protagonist Ruuji. His background reveals that he was not born into the militaristic nation of Digald but was instead inducted after its forces attacked his own village. During this attack, he was forced to demonstrate an aptitude for piloting Bio-Zoids, revealing himself to be a prodigy whose natural talent even surpassed that of Jiin, the son of Digald's king. Recognizing this exceptional skill, Jiin befriended Zairin and recruited him as a subordinate, leading to a rapid rise through the military ranks based on the victories Zairin achieved on the battlefield.
In terms of personality, Zairin initially presents a suave and charming exterior, but this belies a ruthless efficiency in combat. He is depicted as a genius Zoid pilot and an excellent tactical strategist, often able to anticipate enemy troop movements and plans. Unlike other Digald commanders such as Georg, who prefer utter destruction, Zairin favors conquering territories and cities rather than demolishing them. For a significant portion of the story, his primary motivation is an obsession with finding a worthy challenge, and he longs to face Ruuji in combat to prove his own superiority. This intense rivalry begins during a raid on Ruuji's village, where Ruuji, piloting with an inexperienced and unpredictable style, manages to cut off the arm of Zairin’s Bio Megaraptor.
Zairin’s role in the story evolves significantly as he gradually becomes disillusioned with Digald. While he had long suspected something was wrong with the empire, his turning point occurs when he witnesses the severe pollution caused by Digald's industry and the suffering of the people from his former village. The critical moment comes when he discovers that the droid pilots of Digald are actually human souls, including that of his long-time friend Whips. This revelation prompts him to defect from Digald and join the rebel forces led by Ra-Kan. His key relationships are central to this development; his friendship with Jiin is a complex bond formed during their academy days, but it is ultimately broken by Jiin's deceptions, such as installing a device in Zairin's new Zoid, the Bio Volcano, that drains his life energy. His relationship with Ruuji transforms from bitter rivalry to a cooperative alliance as they make peace and fight side-by-side against their common enemy.
Throughout this character development, Zairin demonstrates remarkable abilities as a pilot. He is initially handpicked by General Jiin to pilot the Bio Megaraptor, a larger and more powerful version of the standard Bio Raptor equipped with ion boosters and heavy firepower. After this Zoid is destroyed in battle by Ruuji, he is given the even more powerful Bio Volcano, a machine he considers superior in every respect despite the severe physical pain its piloting causes him. In the final battle, Zairin proves instrumental to the rebellion's success, using his Bio Volcano to disable Jiin's bio particle cannon and expose the core of the Bio Tyranno, allowing Ruuji to deliver the decisive strike.
