TV-Series
Description
Mao Jahana is a supporting character in the anime Blood+. She is a high school girl from Okinawa and the daughter of the head of the Jahana Yakuza. She is a classmate of Kai Miyagusuku and harbors a strong romantic crush on him, which becomes a major driving force behind her actions. Mao is notably bossy, stubborn, and strong-willed, with a commanding personality that she likely inherited from her yakuza father. Her blunt and confrontational demeanor often serves as a brave facade, especially when she feels scared or when circumstances do not go her way. Despite her tough exterior, she is deeply caring and determined when it comes to the people she loves.

Mao's primary motivation is to stay by Kai's side and protect him, even after he leaves school to join Saya and the Red Shield. When she learns about Kai's disappearance through Okamura, she forces him to take her along by financing the trip with money stolen from her father, showing her resourcefulness and willingness to take risks. Throughout the series, Mao remains fiercely loyal, though her feelings for Kai are unreciprocated. As she gradually accepts that Kai does not return her love, she matures and begins to warm up to Saya, the girl Kai is devoted to. Mao becomes the only woman in the group of men surrounding Saya and grows protective of Saya's well-being, particularly as Saya's health declines.

A key moment in her development occurs when she accidentally overhears Saya and Hagi discussing Saya's impending thirty-year hibernation cycle. Mao becomes furious and slaps Saya, but she agrees to keep the secret and makes a personal promise to bring Saya back to Okinawa once everything is over. This moment highlights her deep loyalty and her ability to form profound bonds. Later, she tests Kai's feelings by kissing him, but his lack of response leads her to finally give up on her romantic pursuit. She then shifts to playing matchmaker between Kai and Saya, demonstrating her selflessness and growth.

Mao does not possess supernatural abilities; her strengths lie in her strong will, courage, and practical skills such as cooking. She is a normal human who navigates the dangerous world of chiropterans through sheer determination. As the story concludes, she accompanies Okamura to the Middle East. In the later sequel Blood#, she marries Okamura, changes her surname to Okamura, and is expecting her first child, indicating a peaceful and fulfilling future.
