Description
The Major serves as the supreme commander of the Millennium organization and the primary antagonist. His origins trace back to World War II, where he held the rank of a first lieutenant in the SS and was personally chosen by Adolf Hitler to lead a top-secret project known as Special Order #666. The objective of this project was to perfect an artificial vampirization process to create an army of Nazi vampires, turning the tide of the war in Germany's favor. The original operation was seemingly destroyed in Poland by the efforts of Alucard and a young Walter C. Dornez. Following Germany's defeat, the Major and his surviving officers escaped to South America to continue their research in secret.
In terms of appearance, the Major is a short, stout man who is almost always impeccably dressed in an expensive white suit with a matching overcoat, a black tie, and gloves, which gives him a distinct and polished look that contrasts with the chaos he creates. He has blonde hair and sharp yellow eyes, which are framed by a pair of round glasses. Despite having been alive since World War II, he has somehow retained his youth, a feat possibly due to alterations performed by his associate known only as the Doctor, and it is later revealed that his body is that of a cyborg.
The personality of the Major is defined by a singular, all-consuming obsession: a pure and fanatical love of war. This is famously articulated in his long, rousing speech where he declares his love for all forms of conflict, from blitzkriegs to mop-up operations, making it clear that he lives for the act of war itself rather than the outcome or victory. He is characterized by a calm, soft-spoken, and often polite demeanor, which makes his sadistic cruelty and monstrous nature all the more unnerving. While he openly embraces his own evil and sees his subordinates as expendable pawns for his grand designs, he harbors an intense and paradoxical pride in his own humanity. During the fall of Berlin, left for dead among his comrades, he was offered the chance to drink blood and become a powerful vampire. He rejected this offer through sheer force of will, refusing to surrender his human identity even on the brink of death. This willpower is later cited as a supernatural ability, allowing him to repel the corrupting influence of vampirism. He is also a brilliant strategist, masterminding elaborate schemes that unfold with chilling precision and often anticipating the moves of his enemies far in advance.
The Major's primary motivation is not to revive the Nazi regime or achieve world domination for political reasons, but to plunge the entire world into an endless, glorious, and destructive war. He seeks a conflict so grand that it would make Hell itself tremble, leaving nothing behind. He sees Alucard, the vampire servant of the Hellsing Organization, as a personal antithesis and develops a fifty-year scheme specifically designed to permanently defeat him. His role in the story is as the driving force behind the cataclysmic attack on London, where he unleashes his Letzte Battalion, an army of one thousand elite SS vampire soldiers, to cause mass slaughter, carnage, and ultimately provoke a worldwide war. He is directly responsible for the deaths of over three million people.
Throughout the series, the Major maintains a few key relationships. His most loyal subordinates are the Doctor, a mad scientist who maintains his cyborg body and creates monstrous creatures, and the Captain, a stoic and immensely powerful werewolf who serves as his bodyguard. He interacts with Integra Hellsing, the leader of the Hellsing Organization, as his primary human adversary, viewing her as a worthy opponent. His development is largely static, as he does not undergo a moral change or redemption arc; instead, his plans unfold and reveal the depth of his fanatical commitment to his philosophy. He ultimately succeeds in his goal of killing Alucard, even if only temporarily, by using a special vampire agent named Schrödinger to paradoxically erase the great vampire from existence. In the end, he accepts his own death with dignity and a twisted sense of satisfaction, never suffering a villainous breakdown. Despite his grand ambitions and strategic genius, the Major has a notable lack of physical prowess; he is a terrible shot with a firearm and relies entirely on his intellect, charisma, and cyborg body to survive.
