Description
Ama Shigure is the mother of Asa Shigure, one of the main heroines in the story. Her youthful appearance and lively demeanor often lead to her being mistaken for Asa's younger sister, a source of frequent surprise for those meeting her for the first time. Despite her childlike and somewhat sloppy manner of speaking, her qualities as a mother are first-rate, and she cares for her daughter very deeply. Their relationship appears on the surface to be more like that of good friends than a typical mother and daughter.
Her true origin is that of a demon from the demon realm. At some point, she fell into a deep, near-suicidal depression. Feeling she had nothing to lose, she volunteered to be a test subject for a joint project between the gods and demons known as Project Yggdrasil, which aimed to create a superior magical being. She was the first attempt of this project. While the experiment was successful, the genetic modifications were too much for her to handle, causing her enhanced powers to temporarily go out of control. This resulted in a massive explosion that destroyed the laboratory facility and simultaneously teleported her to Earth, specifically Japan.
There, she was found by an unknown Japanese man who nursed her back to health. She eventually became infatuated with her caretaker, and they married. From this union, she gave birth to her daughter, Asa. Ama's husband later died from an unexplained sacrifice made to protect his wife and daughter.
Ama's role in the story is primarily that of a supporting character who provides crucial information. She is the one who reveals the truth about her past and Asa's origins to the protagonist, Rin Tsuchimi. She also tends to playfully tease Rin about his relationship with her daughter. Her motivations are centered on protecting her family and living a peaceful life in the human world, a stark contrast to her traumatic past as an experimental subject. She passed her inherent magical abilities on to her daughter, which is why Asa possesses powers beyond those of a normal human.
In terms of notable abilities, Ama possesses enhanced magical power as a result of the Project Yggdrasil experiments. Her eyes, like those of the other project subjects, are a distinct purple color, a trait she passed on to Asa. To hide her demon ears while living in the human world before the realms were unified, she is almost always seen wearing a cat-ear hat. She also has a habit of affectionately shortening people's names into cute nicknames, for example, calling her daughter A-chan.
