Description
Kōta is the central male figure of the story, a college student who moves from Hokkaido to Kanagawa Prefecture to attend university. He initially stays with his cousin Yuka and takes over the management of a closed inn, the Kaeda House, which becomes a makeshift home for several displaced characters. His background is marked by a deeply traumatic event from eight years prior: he witnessed the murder of his father and younger sister, Kanae, at the hands of a Diclonius girl named Lucy. The psychological shock caused him to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and led to a stay in a psychiatric hospital for over a year. To cope, he repressed these memories, retaining only vague fragments of the incident and an emotional wound that shapes his personality.

Kōta is characterized by a genuine, open-hearted kindness. He does not judge people by their appearance or origins, a trait shown when he first meets Lucy as a child and finds her small horns fascinating rather than threatening. He is naturally protective, especially toward vulnerable girls, as they remind him of his lost sister. This drives him to take in Nyu, Lucy's childlike alternate personality, and later to shelter other outcasts like Nana and Mayu. Despite his gentle nature, he can exhibit fierce resistance when his trauma surfaces, reacting with anger or panic to anything that triggers the buried memories.

His primary motivation is the desire for a normal, peaceful life, but his growing attachment to Nyu and the unfolding chaos around him force him to confront the past he tried to forget. He seeks to protect the girls under his care and, ultimately, to understand the truth about the girl who both loved him and destroyed his family. His role in the story is that of an emotional anchor and a bridge between the violent world of the Diclonius and the human world of compassion and forgiveness.

Kōta's key relationships define his arc. With Lucy and Nyu, he shares a tragic bond: Lucy loved him as a child but killed his family in a jealous rage, while Nyu is innocent and unaware of those crimes. He cares for Nyu deeply, and when his memories return, he struggles to reconcile his love for Nyu with his hatred for Lucy's actions. In the anime, he chooses to forgive Lucy, acknowledging that her cruelty was a product of the abuse she suffered. In the manga, he initially cannot forgive her but eventually offers a chance at peace on the condition she never kills again, and later honors her memory by naming his daughter Nyu and fully forgiving her after finding a letter she left at the grave of her childhood puppy. With his cousin Yuka, there is a long-standing affection that she expresses openly, but Kōta's focus remains on his responsibilities and his connection to Nyu. With Nana and Mayu, he becomes a surrogate protector, offering them the stability and safety they lacked.

Kōta has no supernatural abilities. His strength lies in his emotional endurance and his capacity for empathy. He repeatedly risks his own safety to shield others, even when he is physically outmatched. His most notable ability is his power to see past the monstrous to the person beneath, a quality that ultimately allows Lucy to find a measure of redemption. Over the course of the series, he moves from a traumatized young man blocking out his past to someone who faces that pain, makes impossibly hard choices, and finds a form of peace.
