Description
Haruo Yoshikawa is the central male character of Magikano. He is an average junior high school boy who prides himself on a perfect attendance record and possesses no long-term aspirations beyond living a quiet, uneventful life. He lives with his three younger sisters, Maika, Chiaka, and Fuyuno, and is entirely unaware that they possess magical abilities. In fact, Haruo believes his entire family is perfectly ordinary and has no knowledge of the world of magic that exists around him.
In terms of personality, Haruo is characterized by a gentle and caring nature, always willing to help others when he can. He primarily seeks a peaceful existence, often trying to relax by watching television or simply passing the time. However, he is also notably naive and incredibly oblivious, particularly when it comes to the romantic feelings of the many girls in his life. This cluelessness is partly maintained by his sisters through frequent use of magic memory-erasing hammers, which they apply liberally to keep him from recalling magical incidents or their own secret powers. As a result of these repeated memory wipes, Haruo often experiences gaps in his recollection and will occasionally ask if something strange has happened.
Haruo's role in the story is that of the unsuspecting catalyst for the magical conflicts around him. He is the target of affection and schemes for multiple girls, most notably the witch Ayumi Mamiya, who needs to awaken his latent powers to break a curse placed upon her. His three sisters work diligently to keep him ignorant of magic, often clashing with Ayumi and other magical girls who try to get close to him. Despite his ordinary demeanor, Haruo possesses tremendous dormant magical abilities. There are occasions where this power surfaces, such as when a ghost possesses him and channels immense power, or when he becomes enraged after a villain hurts his friends, causing him to instinctively blow apart a castle and reverse time so that only the perpetrator remembers the event. The series finale reveals the full extent of his identity: Haruo is the avatar or incarnation of the Demon Lord. In this original form, he is described as an enormous, shadowy entity with glowing red eyes.
Key relationships heavily define his daily life. His eldest sister, Maika, is fiercely protective and possessive of him, often displaying what others call a brother complex, and she will aggressively combat any female who flirts with him. Ayumi Mamiya, who lives with the family as a maid, constantly tries to seduce him to awaken his powers, though she eventually develops genuine feelings for him. Other girls who show interest include Yuri Kurosu, the student council president who has loved him since childhood, and Marin Nijihara, a Catholic witch hunter who mistakenly believes Haruo is a saint capable of protecting her from evil witches.
Throughout the story, Haruo shows little to no development regarding his awareness of the magical world, as his sisters are persistent in erasing his memories whenever the truth surfaces. While there are moments when his own magic is triggered, his fundamental belief that he is a normal boy remains intact for most of the narrative. The most significant change occurs only at the climax of the anime, when his true nature as the Demon Lord is finally acknowledged. His name contains a temporal theme, as Haruo, written with the character for "spring," is consistent with the seasonal names of his sisters, as he is the oldest child.
