Description
Flonne is a recurring character from a series of strategy role-playing games, first appearing as one of the three main protagonists. She hails from Celestia, the realm of angels, where she held the rank of Angel Trainee. Her initial mission, assigned by the Seraph Lamington, was to travel to the Netherworld and assassinate the ruling Overlord, King Krichevskoy. Upon her arrival, however, she discovered that the King had already been dead for two years, leading her to encounter and subsequently join forces with his son, Laharl.
Personality is the most defining aspect of Flonne. She is characterized by an unwavering, almost fanatical, belief in love and justice, earning her the nickname "Love Freak" from Laharl. This obsession manifests in a naive and innocent demeanor that often borders on being ditzy. She is deeply devoted to spreading the concept of love to everyone, especially demons, whom she believes are capable of understanding it. Her innocent and kind nature is complemented by a quirky enthusiasm for tokusatsu, the genre of Japanese superhero shows, and hero anime, which influences many of her actions and even her special attacks.
Flonne's primary motivation throughout the story is to prove that love exists even in the hearts of demons. Her mission changes from assassination to observation as she decides to follow Laharl, hoping to soften his cynical and self-serving attitude. She acts as a moral compass and a foil to the more pragmatic and cruel demons around her, constantly trying to steer them toward acts of compassion. Her role in the narrative is often that of a healer and a source of comic relief, but also a catalyst for emotional development in other characters, particularly Laharl.
Her key relationships are central to her development. Her dynamic with Laharl is a core element of the story; while he constantly rebuffs her lectures on love, her persistent sincerity gradually influences him. She shares a complicated and humorous rivalry with the vassal Etna, with the two often bickering but ultimately forming a strong, if unusual, friendship. Her deep respect for Seraph Lamington, who acts as a father figure, drives many of her early actions.
Flonne undergoes a significant transformation over the course of the first game's narrative. After being forced to fight against her own kind to uncover a conspiracy in Celestia, she is punished for her transgressions against other angels. As a result, she becomes a Fallen Angel, a transformation that physically manifests as bat-like wings and a barbed tail. Despite this change, her personality remains largely the same, and she continues her mission of spreading love. In later installments, she has re-earned her angelic status and risen to the rank of Archangel, showing her growth and continued dedication to her principles.
In terms of notable abilities, Flonne is primarily a magic user, with a natural aptitude for staves. Her skillset is balanced between powerful healing magic, which is her specialty, and offensive holy-based attacks. Her signature abilities include Holy Arrows, a volley of energy projectiles, and Divine Ray, a powerful beam of light. She also learns the Power of Love, a skill that heals her allies. Reflecting her quirky personality, she possesses comedic attacks like Flonnezilla, where she dons a homemade kaiju costume to crush her foes. Her abilities consistently emphasize her role as a supporter and healer, using the power of love to protect her companions.
