Description
Kantaro Ichinomiya is the central protagonist, a young man living and working as both a folklorist and a part-time exorcist. His profession is driven by a lifelong fascination with the supernatural, which he researches and writes about to earn a living, though he often struggles with deadlines and finances. The period setting is a historical Japan, specifically the late Meiji or Taisho era.

Kantaro possesses the rare and powerful ability to see youkai, mythical creatures and spirits that are normally invisible to humans. This gift, however, caused him to be ostracized and bullied by other children during his upbringing, leading to a lonely childhood. Because he was shunned by people, his only companions were the youkai themselves, a factor that deeply shaped his worldview and his empathetic attitude towards them. As a child, his youkai friends told him a legend about a powerful demon-eating tengu, and Kantaro vowed to find this creature, believing it would make him stronger. This childhood promise became the central quest of his life.

In terms of personality, Kantaro is a complex individual who often presents a facade to the world. On the surface, he can appear lazy, greedy for money, and manipulative, frequently trying to charm wealthy clients or avoid his writing assignments. He is clever and a skilled tactician, able to anticipate reactions and trick others into doing what he wants, which earns him the series' title from his companion Haruka. However, this selfish and immature exterior hides a deeply serious, thoughtful, and compassionate person. He holds a profound empathy for youkai, preferring to reason with them and help resolve their problems rather than simply destroy them, an approach that sets him apart from other exorcists. He carries the emotional scars of his past, including his isolation as a child and his albino condition, which makes him physically distinctive with pale skin, light hair, and red eyes.

Kantaro's primary role in the story is that of a mediator between the human and spiritual worlds. He investigates strange occurrences, banishes malevolent spirits, and uses his unique method of "naming" youkai to form bonds with them. The act of naming a youkai creates a powerful, binding contract, making Kantaro the master and the named youkai his servant. He lives by a personal code that challenges the common belief that humans and monsters cannot coexist in harmony.

His most significant relationship is with Haruka, the legendary demon-eating tengu he spent his life searching for. When Kantaro finally finds and releases Haruka from a seal, he names him, thereby becoming his master. While this establishes a formal master-servant dynamic, their bond deepens into a genuine and close friendship. The series explores this connection in depth, as Haruka struggles with lost memories and his own identity, and Kantaro must face the potential of their contract being broken. Another key relationship is with Youko, a fox youkai (kitsune) whom Kantaro also named. Youko lives with him and acts as a surrogate housemaid, cook, and a loud, impulsive presence who often nags him about his laziness and the household finances.

Throughout the series, Kantaro undergoes notable development. While he begins with a seemingly carefree attitude, the narrative gradually reveals his painful past and the strong emotional bonds he has formed with his youkai companions. He is forced to confront threats to his relationship with Haruka, testing his resolve and revealing his deep-seated fear of losing those he cares about. His journey is not about becoming a traditional hero who vanquishes evil, but about maintaining a found family built on trust and mutual respect despite the forces that seek to tear it apart.

Kantaro's notable abilities stem from his high spiritual power and his mastery of esoteric rituals. Beyond seeing and communicating with youkai, his signature power is the ability to name them, thereby binding them to his service. He is also a skilled exorcist, trained in Shingon Buddhism and Shinto practices, allowing him to perform various rituals and ceremonies. He carries beads, which he uses as a tool during exorcisms to cleanse spirits. He is highly intelligent and a cunning strategist, which he often uses to resolve conflicts through non-violent, peaceful means rather than brute force.
