Description
Kanta Mizuno, widely known by his moniker Desert Punk or the Demon of the Desert, is a 17-year-old mercenary operating in the harsh environment of the Great Kanto Desert. He is notably short in stature, a fact that often draws comments and insults from others. His typical outfit is specialized for survival, consisting of aramid fiber clothing including a cape, gloves, pants, and boots, all designed to protect him from the extreme desert temperatures. He almost always wears a Zero-Type Helmet System for climate control. A key part of his attire is a sunshade featuring the red sun-and-horizon symbol of his mercenary guild, though he later replaces this with a red bandana and, eventually, a dark outfit with a spiked Stahlhelm.
Kanta's personality is defined by a deep-seated cynicism and a profound lack of regard for human life, believing that survival in the desert should be left almost entirely up to the individual. He is a self-serving opportunist with a lecherous and crude disposition, making no moral distinction between legitimate tactics and underhanded methods like kidnapping or bribery, especially when the goal involves sex with attractive women. His most pronounced weakness is his obsession with large breasts, a failing that frequently overrides his otherwise sharp intellect and leads him into exploitative situations. The most prominent example of this is his infatuation with Junko Asagiri, a beautiful but devious woman who consistently tricks and uses him. Kanta is fully aware of her manipulative nature, yet his attraction to her is so strong that he willingly falls into her traps time and again.
Despite these glaring personal flaws, Kanta is a consummate professional when it comes to completing a job. He is renowned for his legendary success rate, a reputation built on a combination of uncanny good luck, practical thinking, quick instincts, and a sharp, adaptive intelligence. His overriding motivation is the completion of any task he is given, regardless of the cost or danger, and he is willing to betray allies or use anyone as a tool to achieve his objective. In the latter part of the story, his motivations shift from simple survival and greed to a desire for power and a position within the established order. This culminates in him betraying his friends to join the West Oasis Government, becoming the frontline commander of its 8th Army, a battalion of robot soldiers he calls Guardians. He even sacrifices his right arm to become a cyborg, further solidifying his control over this army.
In the narrative, Kanta begins as the central protagonist and an antihero, a small-time mercenary known for his elaborate schemes and perverted gags. His role evolves significantly as he reluctantly gets pulled into a political uprising and eventually switches sides to become a primary antagonist. His most significant relationship is with Taiko Koizumi, a young girl he nicknames Kosuna. He only accepts her as his apprentice after she shows him a picture of a large-breasted woman, claiming it is her mother, as he hopes she will develop similarly. Over time, he trains her in the mercenary trade, though his methods are harsh and he remains emotionally detached. Other key relationships include his childhood acquaintances, the Machine Gun Brothers and their sister Natsuko Kawaguchi, whom he has known the longest but does not genuinely care for. He also has a competitive rivalry with another powerful mercenary named Rain Spider.
Throughout his development, Kanta remains largely static in his core personality, staying crude and self-serving, but his role in the world changes dramatically. He transitions from a solo operator and comic figure to a major political and military player, ultimately becoming a devil-like figure who enslaves others with his robot army. In a future timeline, he is remembered as a tyrant who brought despair to a city until he was driven back.
Kanta's notable abilities stem from his mastery of a wide array of weaponry and deceptive tactics. His primary weapon is a Winchester Model 1897 shotgun, a memento from his late father, which he can load with specialized ammunition including grenade rounds, flashbangs, and smoke screens. He is also proficient with a combat knife and a Smith & Wesson Model 10 revolver. His signature tactic is deception, using a rocket-powered winch on his back to propel himself and swing across terrain, creating the illusion of flight. He also employs numerous dummy balloons that look exactly like him to confuse enemies about his true location. Kanta is an expert with explosives like C-4 and has been known to rig his own supplies with sabotage devices in case they are stolen. His strategies focus on remaining hidden, using smokescreens to break line of sight, and outsmarting opponents rather than engaging in direct confrontations.
